A Central Love Story/Relationship
The couple overcoming obstacles together
An emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending

Synopsis of The Last Song
Veronica (Ronnie) and her younger brother Jonah, whose parents are divorced are sent to live with their father for the summer. They went from New York to a beach house in the small town of Tybee Island, Georgia. This is where she crosses paths with Will and a summer romance rose.
Synopsis of Love Story
Harvard Law student Oliver Barrett and music student Jennifer Cavilleri meet in a local library. Despite their differences, the young couple puts their hearts on the line for each other. They struggle battling both family and financial issues. Relying only on each other, they believe love can fix anything. But fate has other plans. When Jennifer becomes very sick, what began as a close friendship becomes the love story of their lives.

Romance novels have been around for hundreds of years and continue to remain to be one of the most popular types of novels. Over the years as the romance genre evolves, it still remains to be an enjoyable genre that everyone can enjoy. Two novels that fit the criteria of the romance genre are:

Love Story by Erich Segal
The Last Song
At the very beginning Ronnie initially did not like Will
“With his answer, she got the feeling that he was trying to flirt with her, but she didn’t know why. It didn’t make sense- she knew she wasn’t his type, and frankly, he wasn’t her type either. But at this early hour she wasn’t in the mood to try to figure it out…”(114).
Oliver and Jenny fall in love
"Look, Ray, in a mature love affair-" (53)
Oliver and Jenny get legally married
"By the authority vested in him by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Mr.Timothy Blauvelt pronounced us man and wife." (106) and "Jenny, we're legally married!"(107)

The Last Song
Will lied to Ronnie about a situation and they broke up
she said: “’It’s over, okay? You’re not who I thought you were! I thought you were better than this. Go! You’re leaving anyway and we’re never going to see each other again. Summer always comes to an end… I can’t handle this right now; I can’t be with someone I don’t trust. I don’t trust you Will, you need to go’” (344)
Oliver and Jenny must overcome the obstacle of gaining enough money to live day to day
”Every waking moment we were concentrating on how the hell we would be able to scrape up enough dough to do whatever it was we had to do.” (109)
Jenny and Oliver are later faced with an unpleasant surprise
“…Jenny is very sick. She’s dying.” (154-155)
Emotionally Satisfying and Optimistic Ending
The ending of romance novels vary
“Ending can be happy or tragic” (Script Lab)
Romances are emotionally engaging stories of love and relationships. The storyline usually ends with the resolution of a difficult obstacle and they generally take an optimistic outlook on life.” (Smith).
The Last Song
“When he pulled her toward him, she felt everything around her fall away. Will was going to school here. In New York. With her. And with that she slipped her arms around him, feeling his body fit perfectly against her own, knowing that nothing could ever be better than this moment, right now. When he met her eyes, she saw the young man she’d loved last summer and the young man she still loved now.” (405).
Ending is both emotional & optimistic
Jenny tells Oliver how she wants him to be happy even when she’s gone
“…You, after all, you’ll be the merry widower. I want you to be merry. Okay?” (166)
Towards the end of the novel, Jenny shares her final words with Oliver and passes away in his arms
“Would you please hold me very tight? No, Oliver. Really hold me. Next to me.” and “‘Thanks, Ollie.” (184)
