The Story Of An Hour By: Kate Choppin Character Analysis Imagery Contrast Symbol Plot Graph Themes The Story of An Hour “There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window.” “And yet she had loved him--sometimes. Often she had not.” “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble”. The Story Of An Hour By:Kate Chopin Introduction Louis Mallard the protagonist has a severe heart condition and any strongly felt emotion or sudden plot twist can easily bring on a heart attack which can kill her. Rising Action Josephine tells Louise, Louise begins weeping immediately and runs to her room; fortunately the news does not kill her. In her room she cries until her immediate grief lessens and then almost subsides. She begins acknowledging the sense of freedom she feels now, without being tied down to her husband. Although she’s sad she starts feeling hopeful for the potential of the days to come, instead of wondering how she will bear them. Trigger Incident Mr. Mallard had died as result of a train accident, Louise does not yet know but Josephine her sister does and is responsible for telling her. Climax As Louise and Josephine arrive downstairs, Mr. Mallard walks in, fully alive and breathing and completely unaware of the current situation. His reported death happened to be a mistake. Denouement Josephine and Richard attempt to shield Mr. Mallard from Louise’s view, However Louise catches a glimpse of her husband and lets out an overly-excited shriek. Conclusion Louise dies, seeing her husband alive and breathing was so sudden and came with such shock it resulted in a heart attack leading to Louise’s death on the spot. The significance of time an how even a second can change the rest of your life. Attributes of Louise Mallard
Emotional and Demonstrative
When she hears the news about her husband’s death, instead of being paralyzed with shock she begins weeping immediately in front of everyone. She tells everyone how she is feeling and reacts dramatically to anything that happens to her.
Dependent
She has been dependent on her family for everything needed to live. Josephine and Richard came to her at once to assist her after her husband’s death. Everyone is always looking out and taking care of her because of her sickness. Attributes of Brentley Mallard
Kind and Loving
Louise says about Mr. Mallard, “the face that had never looked save with love upon her,”
This phrase means that whenever he looked at Louise his face displayed his love and he never bothered to hide it. This feeling must be very powerful if Louise could tell just by looking at him how he was feeling. Also Louise cries a lot when he dies and thinks highly of him in her thoughts even though he tied her down. She would only feel this way if she felt loved by him.
A Good Friend
Richard Mr. Mallard’s friend and co-worker came to Louise as soon as he heard the news of his death, Obviously if Mr. Mallard had behaved badly with Richard he wouldn’t have reacted this way. He left his work and whatever he was doing to assist his friends wife, which means he must have had a strong bond and friendship with Mr. Mallard Quotes “when the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her.” “She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long. It was only yesterday she had thought with a shudder that life might be long.” It was the joy that killed her
