How to Plan and Design
a Yearbook Spread A Design Brief states your objectives, a time frame, and a detailed explanation of your needs and expectations. A thumbnail is a rough sketch or design of what the final project is intended to look like. Key elements such as picture and text boxes, and headings. It is meant to be edited and changed as needed. Point refers to a single spot on a page that serves as a foundation or building block for a design. Its purpose is to direct the reader's eye to a certain part of the page. Line, similar to point, shows movement and can help create a certain mood in the reader. For example, vertical lines elongate the page, horizontal lines create a relaxed feeling, and curved lines suggest an organic theme Pattern is the repetition
of elements such as
lines, points, or
shapes Shape, such as circles,
squares, and triangles,
are used as building
blocks for a design
and can help
create a pattern. Color is used to add impact or intensity to a design
Primary- Red, Blue, Yellow
Secondary- Green, Purple, and Orange
Tertiary- all the other
colors in between Form allows you to add a 3D effect to your design and also gives your design perspective. Tone is the use of shadowing or tinting colors to give your design a sense of light or dark. The overall purpose of tone is to add depth to a design. Texture is defined as the characteristic of a surface. It adds dimension and depth to a design. Letterform is most often used in titles or important headings to convey a message or induce a certain tone or mood. Figure refers to the main focus within a design and the Ground is the area that surrounds the figure. Either one can
be dominant depending
on your intent or
design. Balance is the use of symmetrical or asymmetrical elements, shapes, or designs to draw the readers eye to a certain place on the page or design. If the balance is poor it detracts from the design. Contrast refers to the relationship between the elements of the design. Big vs. little and color contrast Cropping is the process of selecting the elemts of design you want the viewer to see. Usually used to
focus on the most
important image. Hierarchy is a principle that determines how important or dominant an element is to a design. Size, weight and scale all influence hierarchy on a page. Scale is often used to show exaggeration and refers to the size of an object in relation to other objects in the design. Proportion in a design
is the relationship
between various elements
and whether they are
pleasing to the eye. Asymmetrical
Symmetrical
