A Positive Behavior System

What is it?
PAX is Latin. It means peace, productivity, health and happiness. It is balance and harmony in daily life.
Paths to PAX is a school-wide behavioral approach which promotes positive behavior. Paths to PAX explicitly teaches social-emotional skills through whole-group lessons and also incorporates those lessons into a behavioral management system.
The Classroom Environment...
A Paths to PAX environment is set up to promote teamwork and positive interaction among students. Students are in groups, which encourages them to work together. There is a section of the room designated as "PAX Place" which is a spot of reflection for students not showing PAX. A bulletin board is set up for "tootles," which are written recognitions of students who show PAX.
Routines in our room...
Students are guided daily by posters around the room which we make together. We work as a community to set expectations for what each routine in the room should "look like, sound like, and feels like." For example, we have "looks like, sounds like, and feels like" posters for everything from entering the classroom to cafeteria expectations; from transitioning between classes to fire drill procedures.
The Language of PAX
Peace, balance, harmony. We want to show PAX!
Things that are not OK to do are spleems. Spleems do not show PAX and we want to work to have fewer spleems in our classroom.
When I began at my school, I thought that all of these posters would be a bit of overkill and it might get to be too much. I quickly learned that having the kids work with me to make them really had them take ownership over them. I am able to easily point back to one and say, "Remember when we made this poster? Remember how we said that during a read aloud we would be sure to keep our eyes on the teacher and not play with our pencils?" It really reminds them that THEY were part of the process.
Creating a safe environment...
Creating a safe environment is important on many fronts. Having our students feel safe truly creates the right environment for learning. If a student feels safe, they learn to voice their opinions, they learn to take risks as well as criticism.
In my classroom, I do this by using the Paths to PAX program to create a true sense of community. We work together, we learn together, we support one another, and we grow as a team.
Classroom rules at Tunbridge Public Charter School are simple and consistent across the school. They are:
1. Take care of yourself.
2. Take care of others.
3. Take care of our space.
The simplicity and consistency of these rules really help to emphasize their importance. We can point any "spleem" toward one of these rules. If the student was hitting, they weren't take care of others. If the student was drawing on a desk, they weren't taking care of our space. If a student was not paying attention in class, they weren't taking care of themselves.
Students who are rewarded in positive ways, I have found, are more likely to continue to show these positive behaviors. Encouraging students, as well as having students encourage eachother, motivates them to continue to do well. Having continuity of the rules and behavior plan across the entire school also promote positive behaviors as well as motivate students to excel in all areas.
