Introduction
Avi utilizes
foreshadowing
,
similes
and
metaphors
, and
irony
throughout City of Orphans.foreshadowing is when you take a big event and give clues leading up to the event.Simile is when you take someone and compare it to something. Metaphor is when you do pretty much the same as a simile. Last but not least Irony, irony is when you say something about someone that's not true like when you call someone small, big guy.
Body paragraph two.
my author utilizes
similes
and
metaphor
s as a literary device throughout my book by for example for simile when Maks describes Bruno as a "raging bull" when it comes to work in his gang, or for metaphor also when Maks describes Bruno as a "raging bull".In both scenarios it creates an image to the reader that Bruno is a strong powerful angry character that can overpower Maks. I think it enhances the book by making the character sound more interesting and makes you less bored of the character and make you want to read more. I think the author uses similes and metaphors to make sure the reader doesn't get bored of the characters Maks or Bruno.
Body paragraph three.
My author utilizes
Irony
as a literary device throughout the book by for example when an old lady bumped into Willa on the street and said "excuse me... young lady" when Willa is really not a young lady she is really a young street rat that lives in an ally and has dirty raggedy cloths and hair. It made the reader feel the shame of Willa when the old lady called her a "young lady" when she really wanted to say "dirty street rat". I think my author chose this literary device to make the reader think "oh that poor girl" and feel her discomfort and want to read more to see if her life gets better.
conclusion!
Avi's The City of Orphans utilizes
foreshadowing
,
similes
and
metaphors
, and
irony
all throughout the book leaving clues, comparisons ect. and the more it draws you into the book and to see what happens to Willa and Maks, and that's how my book "The City of Orphans" utilizes the four literary devices throughout the book.
my author utilizes
foreshadowin
g as a literary device throughout my book by having suspense.Like when Maks is surrounded by the plug uglies(a gang)and is beaten up by Bruno(the plug uglies gang leader)because Maks is a newspaper seller and has money, or when Maks walks into the prison downtown to talk to his sister and there's some lady following him.this follows foreshadowing because it makes you wonder whats going to happen building suspense.
