Greeting Cards Welcome to our Lesson! What did you find? Activity: Immersion Phase 1 Greeting Cards convey a message, and are often used on special occasions, however they are used for multiple reasons. What to look for and questions to ask:
•Place the cards at your table in order based on eye appeal and card meaning (which ones you like best).
•Discuss with your group why you like certain cards better than others.
•Look for key words and themes within your cards.
•Discuss a time where you received a meaningful card.
•Look at the similarities and differences of the cards at your table. Pre-writing: Think of your theme. Are you doing a birthday card? A Christmas card? Think of different KEY words and pictures that relate to your theme. "It is our goal to see that our military- active, reserve, and veterans- receive these messages, whether they are serving at home, abroad, or are injured in hospitals." Dear Soldier,
-Have a serious message instead of a cute or funny message
-They rhyme or are written in prose
-Length: generally a few words or 12 to 16 lines Conventional Cards
-"An attempt to put serious, warm and loving thoughts into a more contemporary sound."
-Most have pictures or paintings of romantic settings, nature settings, or landscapes, with short prose sentiments.
•These are an offshoot of conventional cards
•Long rhymed verses
•Slightly poetic, religious sounding
•Inspirational Inspirational Cards Personal Relationship Juvenile •These are made for children or by children
•There are two types of Juvenile Cards Verse Cards •Like conventional cards
•Have a me-to-you message
•Usually have rhymes and funny word-plays Activity Cards •Includes a game, puzzle, story, or other fun activity
•Must be careful to make sure the card with an activity isn't too expensive to produce. Informal Cards (aka cutes) •These use plays on words or soft humor Humorous (aka illustrated cards) •Can be simple me-to-you messages
•"Almost always a strong tie between the sentiment and the art."
•Written in prose, short or long rhyme
•These cards "tickle you" Studio Cards •Hilarious! These are the cards that make you keel over from laughing.
•They contain contemporary humor, so this style is constantly changing. •Sir Henry Cole is credited for developing the first Christmas card in 1846. •Louis Prang started his publishing company in 1848 in Boston. •Prang mastered a process for colored printing in 1866. •Prang began producing Christmas cards in 1874 By the early 1900's U.S. producers dominated the greeting card market. •In 1919, Joyce Clyde Hall started making "friendship cards." •By 1939, greeting cards were a U.S. $80 million industry. •By the 1950's, the greeting card industry was producing about 5 billion cards a year. •In the 1990's, it grew to $4 billion in the U.S. •In 2001, sales decreased due to economic decrease. •"Online Card Centers logged millions of hits per week in the late 1990's." •Number of greeting card manufacturers in the industry:
-2002: 2,000 •In 2005, small independent companies were selling primarily through the internet. •In 2007, American Greetings celebrated its 100th anniversary. •In 1954 Hallmark Card Inc. was created. 1840 1850 1860 1870 1880 1890 1900 1910 1920 1930 1940 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010 Louis Prang and Company Art and Educational Publishers hosted an essay contest. •In 1885 the winner, Janet Huntington McKelvey said that the most important function of the Christmas card was, "to carry the Christmas message of good-will and love from friend to friend." •Three companies dominated the market:
-The "Big Three": Hallmark Cards Inc., American Greetings and Gibson Greetings (now owned by American Greetings)
-These three companies had 85% of the U.S. market in the mid-1990's. •Hallmark Cards Inc. is privately owned
•American Greetings Corporation is publicly owned
•Today greeting cards have a price range from less than $1 up to $10.
-Large companies have in-house creative staff: including graphic artists, designers, creative consultants/ directors, and writers
-Small companies are run by using freelancers
-Printing is usually done in-house; however, Hallmark uses an outside printer. FUN FACTS!!! •"U.S. households purchase about 35 cards annually, and about 90 percent of all households send at least 1 card annually." Drafting: This is the stage when you are placing things on your card BEFORE you glue them down. This is also the stage where you write your message in PENCIL so that way you can go back and edit it later. Sharing: Share your card with your teacher and your peers. This stage in the writing process is a good time to get input from other people on your card. Peers can help point out any spelling mistakes or give ideas on how to improve your card. Revising: Take all of the input that you were given in the last stage (sharing stage), and "fix" your card. Editing: Look over your card to make sure that it contains no spelling mistakes grammatical errors. Publishing: In this stage you can now go over your words with marker and you can glue down all of the things that you wanted to put on your card. Sending your card is also part of the publishing stage. Assessing: Looking at your "masterpiece", think of what you would do differently next time (this could be done before you send the card). -Santa Claus, reindeer, sleighs, Christmas trees, glitter balls, Christmas stockings, bells, yule log, feasting, hunting, turkey, candy canes, ribbons, snowflakes, gingerbread houses, holly, ivy, mistletoe, poinsettias, wreaths, carol singers, snowmen. •Popular Messages and Quotes:
-"Merry Christmas" or "A Happy Christmas"
-"Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year"
-"Happy Holidays", "Season's Greetings"
-Best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season"
-If you get stuck a quote or message can be borrowed from previous cards that have been received or browse the greeting card aisle to gain inspiration. Cheaper German imported cards hurt his business and he closed his business in 1890. Greeting Card Association (GCA) reported that in 2006 in the U.S. about 7 billion cards are sold annually. This brings in about $7.5 billion in sales. For this activity, we are going to make Christmas Cards for A Million Thanks, which is an organization that sends cards to U.S. Military Men and Women over seas. This organization was created by high school students in California. Their goal was to send a million letters and or cards to the troops. Currently 5,200,000 letters have been sent.
