The nature of 'reading'
is changing!
Browsing
'Not' reading from the top down
Looking/scanning for links
Ian Juke's Study
Students focused on the
top
and
left
side of the page
The right side and bottom are mostly
ignored

So where so the important information go???

Specific colors
attract and repel
digital natives
when they’re reading
Blood red
draws attention
first
, then
neon green
and
burnt orange
are skimmed
Black
is ignored completely - and our typical exam -
black
on white background!
Long form vrs Short form books!

Any book over 100 pages - LONG!

Over 100 pages - no instant gratification!
Long is out!!!
Thanks (??) to technology - we now have
'choices'
when it comes to reading:
Digital
is now outselling Paper
Devices
are becoming more the norm to use for reading.
Can change:
font size
font color
font background
We are reading
'wider'
NOT 'deeper'!!
What are schools doing in the area of 'literacy'?

Traditional definitions for Literacy:
There was a focus on the ability to read, write, speak and listen (unimodal).
From PISA:
An individual’s
capacity to understanding
,
use and reflect
on and
engage
with
written texts
, in order to
achieve one’s goals
, to
develop one’s knowledge
and
potential
and to
participate in society
.
Today's definition of Literacy:
Literacy today depends on
understanding the multiple media
that make up our
high-tech reality
and
developing the skills to use them effectively
In the 21st century, society has been
accelerated, media-saturated and automated

– a
new literacy is required
(multimodal)!
Still 'other ' literacies include:
health
historical
ecological
multi media
Literacy is now considered a
'tool'
- a means to
participate more fully
in the
21st century's digital society
(Kist 2005).
21st century literacy is the
set of abilities and skills
where
aural, visual and digital literacy overlap
. These include the ability to
understand
the
power of images and sounds
, to
recognize and use
that power, to
manipulate and transform digital media
, to
distribute them pervasively
, and to
easily adapt them to new forms
.
21st century literacy
• is
multimodal
• includes
creative fluency
as well as
interpretive facility
• means
learning a new grammar
with
its own rules of construction
• lends itself to
interactive communication
• implies the ability to
use media to evoke emotional responses
• has the
potential to transform the way we learn
.

Writing for the Web
Be succinct
– write no more the
50%
of the text you would have used in a hardcopy work
Readers feel unpleasant when reading online text
This is changing as the devices are coming out with higher resolution screens!
Write for scannability
– don’t make readers read long continuous blocks of text
Users tend not to read streams of text fully – instead, users scan text and
pick out keywords, sentences and paragraphs
Web writers use the following:
Structure articles with
2
or even
3
levels of
headlines
Use
meaningful
rather than ‘cute’ headings
Use
highlighting
and
emphasis
to make important words catch the user’s eye –
colored
text is also used
Use hypertext
to
split up
long information in
multiple pages
By using carefully structured hyperlinks,
the reader can select those topics they care about
