By: Maya Lynn Johnson The BIG Idea: Social Media What is social justice? Social media embraces web-based and mobile-based technologies that are used as a form of communication between individuals. How do I use social media ? One of the most significant benefits of using social media is to facilitate open communication among numerous people. This form of communication allows people to discuss ideas, share information, and to post news. Other social media benefits includes a wider expansion of social media marketing. It targets a large audience which makes it an effective tool. Benefits of social media Social media can be harmful by increasing the risk of people falling prey to online scams that seem genuine, resulting in data or identity theft. Another disadvantage of using social media is that it opens up the probability for hackers to launch spam and virus attacks. Social media networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter can cause issues with careers and relationships, thus a total breakdown in communication results.

People use social media to achieve social justice by voicing their opinion on how everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social opportunities. Social media is used to help victims of oppression and also gain equality by letting their voices be heard by millions of other people. Facebook was a key component of help for those victims affected by Hurricane Sandy and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting tragedy. Pages were started on the website that promoted fund raising events and other pages were aimed at collecting supplies for those in need. Also, some pages were used for tracking lost pets or family members. I use social media as a key form of communication in my life. I belong to one social networking site, Facebook. Facebook's main purpose in my life is to share stories and connect with people, but it is also a tool that I can use to express myself. Does social media do more harm than good for our society in the 21st century? Social media does not do more harm than good for our society in the 21st century. Social media networking sites allows people globally to connect with one another, share ideas, form friendships, and to express themselves in any way they choose to. Social media makes it easier to connect and it presents a source of solace. If someone feels isolated they can use search engines like Google to bring that person to a forum of people that feel the same way, thus friendships are formed. Social media is an expanding force in today's world and its impact on society is truly phenomenal. The BIG Question: Social Media Use Interview:

I do not use any social media sites because I still have a flip phone & clearly I am not up to date with the technological age.

I use social media for personal use.
I don't use social media like the younger generation does.
3. Do you think social media is harmful or helpful to society today?
It can be harmful & helpful at the same time.
Helpful, because it really has a big impact in life in this amazing technological era we live in.
4. When you go online to social networking sites, do you usually post things you would like to share or do you only read about what others have to say?
I post things & I read posts that others put up.
No, I usually see what other people have on their mind because I like to hear ideas from other people.
5. Do you think social media has revolutionized the world ? If yes, why ? Yes, because we use social media in our everyday lives.
Yes, because everything in today's world revolves around social media. According to CNN social media is boiling with talk about Friday's massacre at a school in Newtown, Connecticut. That's no surprise. The gun- control debates that raged on Facebook and Twitter immediately after the shooting turned others off, and led them to make uncharacteristic posts advocating strong opinions. End ! Both of these sources further support my argument that social media does not do more harm than good for our society in the 21st century. Knowing further information about your potential employee before you hire them is always helpful in the job process. Also, social media was crucial in the school shooting because it opened up people's minds to a new perspective about a powerful topic. Social Media Use Survey: The results are in ! 40% answered "yes" to purchasing a product/service on a social network, 60% answered "no" 70% used the common sites FB, IG, and Twitter, 30% uses no social media sites 100% said "no" to being a victim of cyber bullying 30% had zero friends on their social networking sites, 70% had 300 or more friends 100% spend more than an hour online each week 30% joined a social network on their own, 70% were persuaded by their friends to join 60% use social media to keep in contact with their friends/family, 40% does not use social media to keep in contact with their friends/family 80% used social media to find a job, 20% did not use social media to find a job 60% used social media websites to search for someone they were looking for, 40% did not use social media websites to look for someone 50 % deleted their account on a social networking site at some time, 50% did not delete their account on a social networking site What is Social Media ?
