Structural Layers of the Earth
Write down the layers of the earth and one fact for each.
82% of the Earth's volume
1800 miles thick
Outer Core
1,400 miles thick
liquid metallic iron
causes Earth's magnetic field
Inner core
1,216 kilometer radius
Solid iron core
caused by immense pressures that exist in the center of the planet despite temperature
The Crust
Earth's thin, rocky outer skin
When the Earth was molten and began to cool, the heavier and more dense minerals sank to the center while the lighter minerals rose to the top. The crust is composed of these lighter minerals.
2 Types
Continental Crust
22-70 miles thick
Rocks are older and less dense
Oceanic Crust
5 miles thick
Rocks are younger, darker and more dense
Consists of the entire crust and the very top of the mantle.
Makes the cool shell of the Earth.
100-250 kilometers thick
softer and weaker than the lithosphere
350 kilometers thick below the oldest Lithosphere
The top layer is slightly melted
allows the lithosphere to move independently of the Asthenosphere
Lower Mantle
2,240 kilometers thick
increased pressure strengthens the rocks the deeper they go in the lower mantle
despite strengthening, rocks are very hot and gradually flow
Movie Notes
Go back to the notes taken on the movie. Add as many facts as you need to have at least three per layer of the earth.
Create a model of the structural layers of the earth. Be sure to label and color code each layer within the model. We will create a scoring rubric that all of us will use to evaluate the models in the class. Do not place your name on the model. You will be assigned a number.
Create either an acrostic or concrete poem about the layers of the earth.
