Couple was inside Faraday's station wagon in a parking area
Zodiac Killer shot the vehicle forcing them out Ferrin and Mageau were inside the parked car in the golf course
A car parked behind their car, blocking them from driveway
A man came out of the car with a flashlight, blinding them from seeing the shooter Zodiac Killer shot five times at the car and turned to leave
After hearing screams from Mageau, the killer went back and shot four more times and left
Ferrin died on her way to the hospital
Mageau survived the attack Betty Lou Jensen was shot five times as she fled the scene and died instantly
David Faraday was shot once at close range and died on his way to the hospital Couple was relaxing by the lake
A man claiming to be an escapee from a prison in Colorado asked for car and money to go to Mexico (all of which were not taken)
He then instructed Shepard to hog-tie Hartnell with precut pieces of a clothesline that he supplied
Then, he tied up Shepard and told the couple, "I'm going to have to stab you people" Shepard was stabbed 10 times, five in the front and five in the back.
Hartnell was stabbed six times in the back
Shepard died 48 hours within attack
Hartnell recovered and became an attorney in Southern California Stine, a cabdriver, picked up Zodiac and parked a block away from where Zodiac had originally requested
The cabdriver was shot once in the head at point-blank range
Three young witnesses watched the crime and called the police According to them, the Zodiac Killer wiped the cab with a piece of the cabdriver's bloodstained shirt The Car Door An hour after the crime, a man claiming responsibility for the double-murder called the Napa Police Department from a phone booth
Officers working at the crime scene found a message on the victim's car door Zodiac Killer's signature, cross-circle symbol
Dates of all three crimes This marked the first time all the crimes were clearly related
"By Knife" - an evolution to the degree of violence The Call At 12:40 a.m. an anonymous male caller contacted the Vallejo Police Department reporting the double murder
During the call he also said he was responsible for the Jensen-Faraday murders
Police traced the call and found it was made from a phone booth located a few blocks away from the police department and less than a mile from Darlene Ferrin's home
"I wish to report a double murder. If you will go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to a public park, you will find the kids in a brown car. They have been shot by a nine-millimeter Luger. I also killed those kids last year. Good-bye" The First Letters On August 1, 1969, the Zodiac Killer sent similar letters to three newspapers (San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle and Vallejo Times-Herald) to, among other things, assume responsibility for the past two crimes, providing details not publicly known Another letter was sent on August 4, 1969 to the San Francisco Examiner:

Dear Editor This is the Zodiac speaking...
I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST DANGEROUE ANAMAL OF ALL TO KILL SOMETHING GIVES ME THE MOST THRILLING EXPERENCE IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN GETTING YOUR ROCKS OFF WITH A GIRL THE BEST PART OF IT IS THAE WHEN I DIE I WILL BE REBORN IN PARADICE Second Letter I HAVE KILLED WILL BECOME MY SLAVES I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MY NAME BECAUSE YOU WILL TRY TO SLOW ME DOWN OR STOP MY COLLECTING OF SLAVES FOR MY AFTERLIFE Investigation Over 2,500 suspects
