Violence and Bullying in the High School
What is the Wakefield YRBS?
High School Survey Demographics
A survey taken on March 7, 2014 by Wakefield youth. The survey was adapted from the 2011 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It is meant to measure risk factors in youth (i.e. sexual behaviors, suicidal behaviors, substance abuse, etc.). Steps were taken to ensure accurate data through a process known as "data cleaning."
November 2013:
Superintendent Zrike approves 2014 Youth Behavior Survey to be administered in grades 7-12, Wakefield Public Schools.

He appoints Risk Behavior Workgroup: Ruth Clay, Town of Wakefield Health DIrector; Catherine Dhingra, Town of Wakefield Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator; TJ Liberti, Vice Principal Wakefield Memorial High School; Andrew Tetrault, Vice Principal Galvin Middle School

Youth Risk Behavior Survey Administered
Process
December '13-February 14
: Youth Risk Behavior group met to:
Identify potential evaluators, solicited bids, and selected Health Imperatives, in Brockton, MA to provide Scantrons, scan data, and develop comprehensive data reports
Worked with Evaluator to add/eliminate survey questions with a focus on increasing understanding of mental health concerns
Mid February '14:
Passive Parent Consent Forms sent home. Survey and survey rationale available in WMHS and Galvin Main office for parents/caregivers to review

Purpose of the Survey?
To allocate appropriate resources and decide what behviors need more focus
For example: By monitoring resources and focusing more on tobacco usage the statistic, "Used cigarettes in the last 30 days" went from 16% in 2011 to 10% in 2014.
