C

Conflict

CONFLICT

Person vs self

Throughout the book, she has a main internal conflict which is her decision of whether she should live or leave with her parents.

Choice between life and death

THEME

Concept of CHOICE

Choice of whether to succumb to her injuries or fight to stay alive. The idea is initially suggested by Nurse Ramirez, who provides not only physical care but also serves as emotional support for Mia. She informs Mia’s grandparents that Mia is aware of her surroundings and is fighting to stay alive, so they should support her.

Good things do not come without sacrifices

MIA

"I was quiet in class. I didn't raise my hand a lot or sass the teachers. And I was busy, much of my time spent practicing or playing in a string quartet or taking Theory classes at the community college.”

B

"Sometimes I did feel like I came from a different tribe. I was not like my outgoing, ironic dad or my tough-chick mom."

  • Introverted
  • Insecure
  • Self-doubting.

ADAM

ADAM

“It wasn’t that Adam was such a popular guy. He wasn’t a jock or a most-likely-to-succeed sort. But he was cool. Cool in that he played in a band with people who went to the college in town. Cool in that he had his own rockery style, procured from thrift stores and garage sales, not from Urban Outfitters knock-offs."

Correspondence 1

Protagonist in the beginning

C

...she was crying and kept talking about "this fight". I didn't understand what she meant by that but she said she wanted to give up. now I realize what she meant. she meant the fight between life and death. I remember her bloodshot eyes filled with tears...she said she doesn't know what to do, she wished that her heart would stop beating or the doctors would make a mistake to end this fight so she wouldn't have to choose. I begged her to stay but she was so lost and hurt that I couldn't blame her for her decision...

Correspondence 2

Protagonist in the end

“I had the dream again but this time Mia was calmer. She sat in front of me and asked "why should I stay?" I knew what she meant. I was happy. She was considering her options. I talked to her about her big dreams and bright future. A smile came on her lips. for a second I thought everything was ok. but then she asked me if I would support her if she left. I didn't know what to say. of course I didn't want her to leave. but I know that everything is so messed up in her life and I'm not dumb enough to think that I can change it. before I could say anything, she looked like she found her answer and she disappeared and I woke up.”

Correspondence 3

Character from novel (Adam)

"Open your eyes, to a whole new world

Know that I’m here

Know that I’m here, waiting

Won’t leave your side

Stay strong, stay bright

I’m always here, waiting

No matter what

You choose to do

I’ll always be here, waiting

Open your eyes,

Please don’t leave me here, waiting

Give me a sign,

Give me some hope,

To keep waiting"
