"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."

Helen Keller

Opening

Prayer

Ephesians 4:16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

James 1:5-6

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.

President/CEO

"I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right; but it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation may be on the Lord's side."

Philosophical Underpinnings

  • Generational poverty is more than the lack of financial resources. Families in generational poverty are also challenged with three other forms of poverty: educational, parental, and spiritual .
  • Hopelessness is the key factor in creating the cycle of poverty. Without hope and the belief that life can be better, the motivation and energy needed to break the cycle are very low.
  • Generally speaking, people don't have problems which need to fixed, rather they have directions that need to be changed.
  • While not stated overtly, critical to the success of our programs is the inclusion of faith-based principles.

Our Approach

  • Our change model is a proven, innovative and dual-generational attack on the devastating effects of generational poverty

Our Model is Transformative

Our Work is Holistic

Our Motivation is Empowerment

  • We accomplish our mission through the strategic employment of four programs. These programs can be employed separately or collectively depending on the audience and the desired result.

School of Nursing

As part of an overall desire to reduce poverty, Ignite Community Solutions partnered with UT Health San Antonio, School of Nursing to conduct a programmatic evaluation.

Program Aim:

Determine the effectiveness of the Ignite model for developing positive social and psychological well-being and its correlation to eliminating or reducing real and perceived barriers to educational and career success for low-income individuals.

Timeline:

Phase 1: Sept 2018 - Feb 2019

Phase 2: Mar 2019 - Aug 2019

School of Nursing

UT is using the "Theory of Planned Behavior" to evaluate our program:

  • The theory suggests that it is possible to predict an individual’s "intention to engage" in a behavior (in this case, success behaviors that lead to self-sufficiency) at a specific time and place.
  • It also posits that individual behavior is driven by "behavior intentions," where behavior intentions are a function of three determinants:

• attitude toward behavior, (the degree to which a person has (+) or (-) feelings of the behavior of interest)

• subjective norms, (belief about whether significant others think he or she will perform the behavior) and

• perceived behavioral control (refers to the individual’s perception of the extent to which performance of the behavior is easy or difficult)

School of Nursing

Midpoint Findings:

  • Measurement devices proving to be incredibly reliable
  • All measurements (attitude toward behavior, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control) increased significantly while and after attending the programs
  • Participants are mostly young adults, male, hispanic and from disenfranchised zip codes

Next Steps:

  • Expand Impact: African-American participants from disenfranchised zip codes needed
  • Participants are building the capacity to get themselves out of poverty, but need more long-term data to determine how this is happening
  • Published manuscript forthcoming
