Summary

Theme

Theme

The theme shown in this chapter is social class.

Mrs. Fairfax tells Jane to "Keep Mr. Rochester at a distance. Gentleman in his station are not accustomed to marry their governesses." (pg. 269)

Jane comes from a poor family background. Mr. Rochester is a very rich man that owns Thornfield. Rich people like Mr. Rochester do not normally associate with a poor governess like Jane whose only job was to teach Adele at Thornfield.

Religion

This is also a theme shown in Chapter 24.

"My future husband was becoming to me my whole world; and more than the world: almost my hope of heaven. He stood between me and every thought of religion, as an eclipse intervenes between man and the broad sun. I could not, in those days, see God for his creature of whom I made an idol." (pg. 279)

Jane chooses to love Mr. Rochester over God. To Jane, Mr. Rochester is an idol who JAne spends time worshipping to.

Prediction

On pg. 270, Mr. Rochester says "For I am to take mademoiselle to the moon, and there I shall seek a cave in one of the white valleys among the volcano-tops, and mademoiselle shall live with me there and only me."

The moon can signify a far away place where Mr. Rochester and Jane could run off to after their marriage leaving Thornfield behind.

Connections

Connections

When Mr. Rochester showers Jane with all these gifts she said, "I will not be your Celine Varens. I Shall continue to be Adele's governess," (pg. 274)

Celine Varens was dicussed by Mr. Rochester in Chapter 15 on pg. 143 where he would give Celine "diamonds, cashmeres, carriage, dentelles, and etc."

Jane does not want Mr. Rochester's gifts and does not want to dress up fancy for him. She would rather be a plain governess wo teaches Adele.
