Abe Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States.
He was the president before, during and just after the Civil War.
The attack on Fort Sumpter was enough to convince Lincoln to call on the states for 75,000 volunteers. And the war began.
The Civil War began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumpter.
As president, Lincoln built the Republican party into a strong nationorganization and rallied supporty for the Union cause.
On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy.
On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor, who somehow thought he was helping the South.
Lincoln came from a humble background. His father was a frontiersman from Kentucky. His mother died when he was ten. He married Mary Todd, and they had four boys, only one of whom lived to maturity.
