Texting and Driving Jill Best 46 percent of drivers ages 16 to 37 admit to texting while driving. It is not just teens and adults in cars but also a problem in public transportation drivers who were texting were 23 times more at risk of a "crash or near crash event" than "nondistracted driving." According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted drivers account for almost 80% of all crashes and 65% of near-crashes in the United States.
