Sulfur (S) Physical Properties As you can tell from this presentation, Sulfur is one of the most important elements in the periodic table. It has so many current and historical uses that we could not do without including many natural uses. I hope you learned all there is about #16! Sulfur, it's the Greatest Colour: Solid - yellow

When burned - blue flame Chemical Properties Reaction with Water? No Discovery of Sulfur Sulfur has been known to humans since ancient times and was originally called brimstone. Sulfur was originally used to fumigate against harmful diseases several thousand years ago because of the poisonous gas it creates when it is burned.

In 1777, Antoine Lavoisier made a famous list of the elements where sulfur made it's first appearance and became a recognized chemical element. Lavoisier made this discovery of sulfur being an element instead of a compound while working in Paris, France. After being more widely used in the 1800's, sulfur in the sulfuric acid form, was very important to countries and even caused wars over who owned it. How we use Sulfur Sulfur is a common element of our world that occurs and is used in many different places. Sulfur can be found in meteorites, close to volcanoes and hot springs as well as in minerals such as galena, gypsum and Epsom salts. Sulfur is sometimes found in the air as a chemical compound (sulfur dioxide) caused by volcanic activity and industrial processes. Sulfur dioxide is a toxic gas that has an irritating smell. Plants need sulfur to function properly and therefore have a high concentration of it.
Sulfur is used to make gunpowder, to vulcanize rubber, to make fertilizer, and to produce paper. The main commercial use of sulfur is as a reactant in the production of sulfuric acid which is the number one bulk chemical in the world.
