By: Alison Hall Genetic Engineering What is Genetic Engineering? I am researching on the vaccine bananas! What are the advantages of the vaccine banana? The advantages of the banana vaccine is that when you take a bite of the vaccine banana, which is full of virus proteins, your immune system builds up antibodies to fight the disease like normal vaccines, so your disease will be killed off. The cost of producing edible vaccines will be as much as 10 to 50 times lower as compared to traditional vaccine production. Another more obvious advantage is that syringes will not be required, which allows vaccinations to be less painful and more importantly reduces the risk of transmission of infectious diseases which run rampant through most third-world countries. Instead, the vaccines can be delivered by food products like bananas which can be eaten raw and served in a puree form How was the vaccine banana created? It was created by when an altered form of a virus was injected into a banana sapling, the virus’ genetic material quickly became a permanent part of the plant’s cells. As the plant grew, its cells produce the virus proteins — but not the infectious part of the virus. What are the disadvantages of the vaccine banana? Currently, developers are unsure who will be willing to grow bananas that cannot be sold on a consumers market. The vaccine bananas require intensive quality control regulations. There is a lot of short term controversy over which governments, and institutions within those governments, would have the difficult and expensive responsibility of overseeing the banana's growth distribution. The problem could also turn into a long term issue regarding money to pay for the expensive regulations for whichever government ends up with the money.
Genetic engineering is the alteration of genetic material and especially the cutting up and joining together of DNA from one or more species for introduction into a living thing in order to change one or more of its characteristics.
