Harper Lee was born April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama
Harper Lee did not use her first name on 'To Kill A Mockingbird' because she didn't want Nelle to be pronounced Nellie
Lee used her mother's maiden name for her protagonist & her family in "To Kill A Mockingbird" (Finch).
gets a job at a bookstore.
In the evenings, she sat outside and wrote.
We didn't think
she was up to much.
She said she was
writing a book, and
that was that.
"Dear Nelle,
You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas."
6 months later, Nelle arrived at publisher J. B. Lippinhoff & Co. to discuss her novel which was originally titled "Atticus".
Harper Lee herself was a lot like the protagonist and narrator in the novel named Scout.
