E-waste What is E-waste? Effects e-waste can cause Lifespan of electronics Work cited E-waste is also known as electronic waste. Electronic waste is created when old, broken, or obsolete computers, phones, or other electronic or electrical devices are thrown away. Every year 140,000 tonnes of e-waste is put in landfills. Thats about the weight of at least 1 and a half CN towers. When the e-waste is sent to landfills they are burnt resulting in the chemicals inside of the electronic parts (including mercury, lead cadmium, and barium) to go out into the air and pollute it. The air that is created by burning e-waste can be very toxic and bad for human and animal health. N.p.: n.p., n.d. Environmental stewardship is a mission in order to sustain readiness, improve quality of life, strengthen civil relations and preserve natural resources. Environmental stewardship is when people take choices that would benefit the world so it can be clean and nice for us to live on. Effects on underdeveloped countries 50% of e-waste Canada and America create are not well looked after. This means the waste could be anywhere and ruining the environment there. In Underdeveloped countries a lot of e-waste is sent there so they can burn and take the waste and pollute their air. Computers and other electronics are getting better and better, this means people will be needing to keep replacing and buying new parts. Unfortunately the old obsolete parts will be thrown away and added to e-waste. computers lifespan have gone down from 6 years is 1997 to 2 years in 2005, this means e-waste is almost tripling how many parts the landfills have. mobile phones have a 2 year lifespan in developed countries. There are many ways we can put an end to e-waste. One way is that the people who create the computers themselves can create a plan to create a longer lasting easier to recycle computer or other types of electronics. Another way we can stop e-waste is by instead of throwing away whole computers we could just replace certain parts of the computer that we need a little boost on. Environmental stewardship could also be used to help reduce e-waste. The people who create these electronics could also try to lessen the amount of toxic chemicals used so the products are safer and easier to manage its waste.
