Symbolism in The Masque of the Red Death What is symbolism? Examples of Symbols when a character, place, thing
or event in a literary work stands
for a larger idea. Important Symbols in "Masque" The Clock Literal meaning: Tells us time is passing in short term
Symbolic Meaning: Passage of time in long term; inevitability of life. Each of us will have our time to die. The Castellated Abbey Literal:A fortress
Symbolic:being trapped, threatened dark castle scary,exclusion of poor The Red Death Literal: this particular plague
Symbolic: death itself

Red=Blood Seven Colored Rooms The rooms are arranged East to West
Literal: directions
Symbolic: Birth to Death Blue= suggest the "unknown" from which people come into the world

Purple=unknown of blue mixed with red = intensity period of rapid beginnings of growth
Green= Spring of life, or youth

Orange= Summer and autumn of life (middle age)

White= suggests age think white hair

Violet= shadowy color; suggests that death may be coming
