Moon Phases
Hello everyone,
Today I'm going to be
talking about the moon's different phases. I'm also gonna talk about how the moon phases happen and how we always see the same side of the moon!
There are a lot of different Moon Phases. You might have noticed them when you looked up at night. In this circle, I will talk about half of all of those Moon Phases. First is the New Moon. The New Moon is when you can't see the Moon. But, it doesn't count if it is hiding behind a cloud or anything like that! It's just when the Moon is completely black because the Sun is reflecting on the other side of the Moon. The side that we can't see. Next is the Waxing Crescent. That is when we see less than 50% of the Moon lit on the right side of the Moon. Next is the 1st Quarter Moon. That is when 50% of the Moon is lit on the right side of the Moon. Next is the Waxing Gibbous. That's when the lit part of the Moon is more than 50% full and the part that's left that isn't lit is on the left side.. It's basically when the dark part is like a crescent. Last is the Full Moon. In movies, this is the moon that dogs, wolves, and werewolves (etc.) howl at. All of you should know and most likely have seen it. It's when the whole side of the Moon that's facing us is lit up.
The Different Moon Phases!
How do we Always see the Same Side of the Moon?
We always see the same side of the Moon because the same side of the Moon is facing the Earth. While the Moon is rotating on it's axis, it is orbiting around the Earth at the same speed. And so, that causes the people and animals to see the same side of the Moon from Earth.

How Moon Phases Happen!
Moon phases happen because of the Moon orbiting, or revolving, around the Earth. Half of the Moon is always lit up and the glowing is actually coming from the Sun. It's just sunlight reflecting on the moon. And when the Moon revolves around the Earth, the sunlight is shining on it. But since the Sun can't shine on all of the Moon, only half of it is lit. But we only see one side of the Moon. That means that all that we can see is different phases of the Moon.
Vocabulary
-Waxing
Waxing is when the Moon Phases are going from the New Moon Phase, on to the Full Moon Phase.

For example: Waxing Crescent and Waxing Gibbous

-Waning
Waning is when the Moon Phases are going from the Full Moon Phase, on to the New Moon Phase.

For example: Waxing Crescent and Waxing Gibbous
Full to New Moon
You already know what the Full Moon is so let's get started with what is after that. So, first off, the Waning Gibbous Moon. That's when the lit part of the Moon is more than 50% lit with a sliver of darkness on the right side of the Moon instead of the right which would be the
Waxing
Gibbous. Next is the Third or Last Quarter. That is when half of the Moon is lit on the left side. The First Quarter is when the lit part is on the right side of the Moon. Next, there is the Waning Crescent which is less than 50% full and is lit on the left side of the Moon. Last but not least, there is the New Moon which we already talked about just like the Full Moon. It's the Moon phase where the side of the Moon that we see is completely black when it is lit on the other side of the Moon which we can't see.
