So what is an inference?
Inferencing is also sometimes referred to as
So inference =
The text

How
(this can be a visual, speech, video, or anything we interact with)
we judge or interpret the text in our head.
Practice 1
Directions
: Label a paper 1 to 5. When I click to an image, write down what you are inferring to be happening in the situation and then explain your answer in 1-2 sentences based on the clues you see in the image. DO NOT share your answers until I say so!
Finding an inference in a text...
One morning during my first week of high school, I walked down to breakfast. My mother took one look at my clothes and said "Are you wearing THAT to school?"
What is the mother implying based on what you can deduce from her dialogue?
If you guessed that the child/teen was probably dressed improperly, you guessed correctly!
Let's Infer what happens in this video!
Directions: Write the questions in your notebook. Then, as you watch the film, answer the questions by inferencing.

1. Why does the dog get upset with the owner and girlfriend at one point?
2. Why does the man get really depressed?
3. Why does the dog decide to help?
4. What does the dog finally "agree" with?
5. What is the purpose of the meatball?
1. Why does the dog gets upset with the owner and girlfriend at one point?

2. Why does the man gets really depressed?

3. Why does the dog decide to help?

4. What does the dog finally "agree" with?

5. What is the purpose of the meatball?
Because he had been getting all the junk food he wanted until the girlfriend changed things and served "healthy" food.
The man and the girlfriend had a break-up so he became depressed and began eating all the junk food again.
The dog realizes how unhappy his master is so he decides to go get the girlfriend back to make his master happy again.
That he has to eat his dog food and be ok with it because it makes everyone happy.
It serves as a reward for the dog for being patient and accepting because now that there is a baby in the house he will get all the human junk food he wants again.

Based on the facial expression of the girl at the front of the photo it is obvious she is in distress and when you look at the way the three girls to the back of the photo are laughing and looking at her it is clear they are bullying her and making fun of her.
The young girl seems upset due to the frown on her face and the fact she is shutting her eyes and covering her ears and it appears that her parents in the background are either arguing or having a discussion about something that is truly upsetting to the little girl.
This picture is evidence of either an intruder in the house attacking a woman or of an abusive relationship based on the stature of the figure at the top of the stairs and the bruising on the young woman's cheek as well as the look of genuine fear on her face.
This picture is evidence of a proposal for marriage based on the silhouette's showing one person down on 1 knee while holding the hand of the one standing. This is the typical stature of a person proposing.

It could also be the begging of forgiveness or the swearing of an oath if it were set in Ancient times.
This image portrays the inevitable death coming to the old woman's husband or loved one based on the hospital setting and the way she is obviously in emotional agony as she holds on to his hand. The man is also barely showing signs of life as he lies there.
Practice 2
You will read an example text and make an inference as to what happens next.
Again - write this in your notebook.
Practice #3
Video/Film
Inferring
In this video, you have to write a summary of the entire cartoon. However...

None of it is in English! Use your context clues and make inferences to what you believe the story is about!
