Transcript of Francisco Tarrega
His major influence is his father. His father played Flamenco and other music styles on his guitar.
When his father was away at work, he would steal his father's guitar and try to duplicate the music his father played.
At an early age, Francisco Tarrega lost his eyesight due to an infection he endured.
This didn't stop Tarrega from learning music.
His first two music teachers were blind;

Tragedy Strikes Julian Arcas, a concert guitarist, was on tour in 1862. He noticed the brilliant talent of young Tarrega. Arcas convinced Tarrega's father to allow his son to go to Barcelona and study the guitar with him. Tarrega's father agreed but on one condition, that his son learns to play the piano and the guitar. Tarrega Meets Julian Arcas Tarrega's father believed that the guitar was being overshadowed by the piano. The piano at this time was very popular. So Francisco Tarrega became proficient at both the piano and the guitar by the time he reached his early teens. Why the Guitar and Piano? Tarrega learned a bit from studying in Barcelona. But these lessons ended shortly after they began. Julian Arcas went back on tour again. Tarrega moved back home in Castellon. Young Adulthood In 1874, Francisco Tarrega entered the Madrid Conservatory, a music college founded in 1830. There, Tarrega studied composition under Arrieta. College Life He recieved a guitar from Antonio Torres in 1869. During this time, guitars from Antonio Torres were top of the line. He bought this guitar with him to the Madrid Conservatory. When his teacher Arrieta heard Tarrega perform in concert, he convinced Tarrega to focus on just the guitar. After College In 1876, Tarrega began teaching students and giving regular guitar concerts at the Madrid Conservatory.
Tarrega began traveling around Spain to perform. During this time, he began composing his own works. Maria Rizo He met his future wife in 1880 while giving a concert in Novelda. They married in 1881 in Novelda.In 1885, they permenatly moved to Madrid after the death of an infant daughter, Maroa Josefa. His Work Schedule In 1880, Francisco Tarrega toured to places like Paris, London and Lyon.He played many compositions by other composers, but he also played a lot of his own works.
He began to transcribe piano works by Beethoven, Chopin, Mendelssohn, and others to enlarge his options of music. New Sound? Around 1902, Francisco Tarrega "created" a new sound on the guitar. He cut off his fingernails and created a sound that is associated with those who learned from him.
The following year, he launched a tour in Italy. He had successful concerts in Rome, Naples, and Milan Conxa Martinez At a concert in Valencia, Tarrega met Conxa Martinez, a wealthy widow who became a valuable patron. She gave Tarrega and his family the use of a house in Barcelona. It was in this house where Tarrega wrote a large bulk of his works, including his most famous work, Recuerdos de la Alhambra. Late Adulthood In January of 1906, Tarrega was affliected with paralysis on the right side of his body.He played through it on the concert stage, but he never fully recovered from it. On December 2, 1909, he wrote his last work Oremus. He died 13 days later. "Lagrima" Lagrima when translated into english means Tear Drop or tears. This short piece of music expresses a sound of angst or suffering. But to me it sounds like a beautiful day going cold and then bright again. "Rosita" Rosita is a polka. A polka is a dance in Central Europe during the 19th century. This piece of music sounds playful to me. Anything playful to me is colorful. Like colorful fish from the sea.
