The civilization of Ancient Egypt was located along the Nile River in northeast Africa. The Nile was the source of much of the Ancient Egypt's wealth. Great Egyptian cities grew up along the Nile as the Egyptian people were able to use the water from the Nile to grow rich and profitable crops. The Nile provided food, soil, water, and transportation for the Egyptians. Great floods would come each year and would provide fertile soil for growing food.
. As a result, archeologists have a lot of well preserved artifacts and tombs to examine in order to find out how the Ancient Egyptians lived.

What is meant by "the gift of the Nile"?
All of Egypt depended on the Nile for water, food and transportation. The Nile also provided the ancient Egyptians with fertile land which helped them to grow their vegetable gardens and raise their animals.
Before modern dams were built the river Nile would flood each year coating the land on either side of the river with thick back mud. This mud was ideal for vegetable gardens growing on.
The Nile River is the longest river in the world.
The Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea.
The largest source of the Nile is Lake Victoria.
The Nile has a length of about 6,695 kilometers .
Its average discharge is 3.1 million litres per second.
The Ancient Egyptians called the river Ar or Aur (black) because of the colour of the water.
HERE COMES A SERIES OF FUNNY GAMES
The Great Pyramid at Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is about
years old, and is the only
ancient wonder still standing.
Until the early 1800's, the Great Pyramid
at Giza was the tallest building in the world!
The Great pyramid was made by hand! It is nearly 800 feet long,
450 feet high.
It was built with over two million of blocks of stone.
The average weight of each stone is about 2,500 pounds - around the same weight as a car!
DO YOU WANT TO WRITE YOUR NAME IN HIEROGRYPHS
years ago, the ancient Egyptians wrote things down using a picture writing called hieroglyphics. The people who did the actual writing were called scribes.
The scribes had a problem. The ancient Egyptians wrote everything down, absolutely everything! Although hieroglyphics were very pretty, it took time to write in pictures.
Hundreds of years later, archaeologists discovered beautiful hieroglyphic writing on the walls of ancient Egyptian pyramids and tombs. The archaeologists had a problem. They knew hieroglyphics had meanings. Although lots of archaeologists could read , there was no one left in the world who remembered what the ancient hieroglyphics meant.
It was most frustrating!
It was not until quite recently, a mere 200 years ago, that a stone was found in Egypt. This stone had the same short story written on it in Greek, in Demotic, and in hieroglyphics. Scientists could read Greek. Scientists could read Demotic. And now, scientists could begin to read hieroglyphics.
The Pharaohs of Egypt were often buried in giant pyramids or in secret tombs. They believed that they needed treasure to be buried with them to help them in the afterlife
