Causes of Symptoms
Diagnosis
Getting Diagnose
Diagnosis
Cognitive processing
-Measure of thinking ability
IQ Test
-Measure of intellectual functioning
Test measure speaking, reading, spelling & writing skills
Frequency Of
Dyslexia is found 15%-20% in the America Population
It is usually found in children
They can be diagnosed later in life but that is rare
Strong evidence that it's passed down
Often have problems reading letters and/or words backwards.
When learning how to talk they are slower then most kids
Confusion with directions or hearing things
Problems with math, they mix up the numbers
While reading certain words they get confused
but as tub
was as saw
While doing math they get frustrated
they read the equations backwards
When children first learn how to talk
dyslexia children are slower to pronounce words
Directions can get confusing
Numbers & names of freeways or streets
Chromosome mutation
Scientist have not isolated a gene 4 dyslexia
Scientist theories believe that:
Symptoms are caused b/c defects on Chromosome 15 (Dyx )
Newly Reported gene on chromosome 2 (Dyx )
Little is known about the molecular process
Causes of Symptoms
Brain
The dyslexic person uses his right brain
Instead of his left to read and spell.
Out of whack corpus callosum
Bridge of nerve cells that transfers information
Left side of brain reads & spells
Right side deals with drawings & patterns

Doctors ask about parents/child medical
history
People go through physical exams
-Hearing test
-Vision Test
Getting Diagnose
Scientist aren't sure, but have a theory
Theory of strong linkage to chromosomes 1 & 6
Heterogeneous (multiple) transmission
"Pinpointed the left inferior parietal lobe, and left middle temporal gyrus as areas of low actuation in dyslexia." ( Nelson)
Evidence shows it's inherited/runs in families
Mode of inheritance
Occurrence
Graphic Representations of
Mode of Inheritance
Treatments
Help from teachers, tutor, or trained professional
Teach same concepts many times
-method called "over-teaching"
Do not pressure, just motivate
