city in the future
town called the smoke Scott westerfield born may 6,1968
Written 5 adult syfi novels
written three sets of books for young adults why he wrote this? he believes our society is headed towards people being able to choose the way they look and it will soon change what we think is beautiful. In his future he wrote that the government will control how you look kindof like how adults try to control how teenagers dress, cut their har, and get tatttoos or piercings This book was also inspired by Ted Chiang's Liking What You See Summery A young girl named Tally Youngblood wanted nothing more than to turn beautiful and be reunited with her best friend peris. After a daring trick she pulled in new pretty town she met a girl shay who had a different perspective of being pretty and didnt want the operation. Shay runs away and this has the potential to keep Tally ugly forever unless she can find shay. 1984 comparison Both societies are extremely controled in 1984 big brother basically brain washed the community to beleive he was right and in the uglies they don't just control the way they look they also control how they think...Big Brother=Specials 1984 was written in 1949
Uglies was published febuary 8,2005 In 1949 WWII was ending, orwell probaly wrote 1984 because the world came so close to being completely controled by Hitler who is relatable to big brother
*He even looks like him In 2003-2004 more and more plastic surgery was being introduced to society...the war on terror was at a all time high and gas started to rise this is probaly why westerfeild showed our dependence on oil lead to our demise what in the world was going on?? my thesis In a society where government controls all ignorance is bliss 1984
Winston went through so much torture when he was sent to room 101
he literally got nothing out of his rebellion
"HE had won the victory over himself. He loved big brother" (orwell 245.) And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed – if all records told the same tale – then the lie passed into history and became truth. Quote vs Quote vs Maybe they didnt want you to realize that every civilization has it's weaknesses. There's always one thing we depend on. And if someone takes it away all thats left is some story in history class" 'We control matter because we control the mind. Reality is inside the skull. You will learn by degrees, Winston. There is nothing that we could not do. vs "not just your face was changed by the knife your personality- the real you inside-was the price of beauty." explanation:
In 1984 there history had been changed and became the truth...In tallys world the truth has been formed into what the government wants them to know. explanation:
in 1984 the government had all control because they have brainwashed everyone...in tallys workd every gave up there own free will withouut even knowing Uglies
Tally's life was so blissful before she knew the truth of what her government was doing to them.
"...the idea of being tracked and monitored and advised every minute of the day repelled tally"(westerfield 355.)
"I am tally youngblood make me pretty."(westerfield 425.) Conclusion: In a society where government controls all ignorance is bliss. I truely believe if Tally and Winston would have resisted the urge to rebel there lives would be so much easier. If you liked the book 1984 you would love this modern tale of a girl stuggling to find herself in a society where the government controls not just what you look like but who you are. The book has a way of exposing the flaws in our society as well as showing the flaws in where our society is heading. http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&biw=1362&bih=531&gbv=2&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=tally+youngblood&aq=0&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=tally+young
