Had a D average in school after father's death
To avoid being drafted enrolled at Fresno College, transferred to Cal State Fresno, and finally UCI where he got his MA in creative writing

Objectives:
Students will read the poem "Oranges" by Gary Soto in small groups.
Students will identify, define, and analyze literary elements and techniques, word choice, phrases, and speakers thoughts and how they emphasize and convey theme

Homework:
Students will write a reflection where they first provide a brief summary of the poem.
Then they will explain how the poem made them feel and any personal connections they made with the theme or the speaker.

Example: loneliness of being a teen in Anne Frank's "The Diary of a Young Girl"
Tone:
an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally conveyed through the choice of words or the view point of a writer on a particular subject.

Example: "“I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

"Sigh" shows that he may have made a decision which he regrets which gives this stanza an unhappy tone
Sensory language:
language that connects to the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) to create an image or description.
Example:
The fragrance of jasmine wafted through the warm summer air as it meandered through each room of the herculean home.
Simile:
A figure of speech making a direct comparison between two unlike things using words "like" or "as"

Example:
"Her hair shimmered
like
water under the sun"
Symbolism:
an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning much deeper and more significant.

Example:

A symbol of peace, purity
Juxtaposition
:
two or more ideas, places, characters and their actions are placed side by side in a narrative or a poem for the purpose of developing comparisons and contrasts.
Example:
