Cooking with Fractions Tania Rosales Cooking is a great way to
introduce Fractions to
Students. Learning fractions through cooking allows students to have a physical model while learning. What is a Fraction? A fraction represents part of a whole.

A whole is one of something. 1 cup= 1 whole 1/2 cup + 1/2 cup = 1 cup 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3= 1 cup 1/4+ 1/4+ 1/4+ 1/4= 1 cup 1/8+ 1/8+ 1/8+ 1/8+ 1/8+ 1/8+ 1/8+ 1/8= 1 cup With your group measure 1 cup of rice. With your group, measure out 1/2 a cup of rice using the 1 cup of rice. What do you notice? Measuring Cups With your group measure 1 cup of rice using the 1/3 measuring cup. What do you notice? With your group measure 1 cup of rice using the 1/4 measuring cup. What do you notice? With your group measure 1 cup of rice using the 1/8 measuring cup. What do you notice? Fraction Pizza Isaac and Kristen want to share a pizza.
Isaac would like pepperoni and Kristen
would like plain cheese. With your group, make a pizza for Isaac and Kristen. Make sure that both Isaac and Kristen get equal parts. Your pizza should have two halves Lisa, Michael, and Stephanie want to share a pizza. Lisa wants olives, Michael wants sausage, and Stephanie wants mushrooms. With your group, make a pizza for Lisa, Michael, and Stephanie.
Make sure that they get equal parts Your pizza should have 3 thirds Lorena, Nayda, Maria, and Deborah went out for pizza. Lorena want pepperoni, Nayda wants olives, Maria wants mushrooms, and Deborah wants plain cheese. With your group, make a pizza that will make all the girls happy.
