Transcript of ACT Writing - Step 4

Introductions Educators debate extending high school to five years because of increasing demands on students from employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities and community service in addition to having high grades. Some educators support extending high school to five years because they think students need more time to achieve all that is expected of them. Other educators do not support extending high school to five years because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance would drop in the fifth year. In your opinion, should high school be extended to five years? A Definition ACT Writing Strategies - Step 4 Prompt:
Discuss the effect genetic engineering has had on society in one of the following areas: food, human reproduction, or diseases. Interesting Quote "Benjamin Franklin said, 'Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today.' Procrastination is one of the biggest time-wasting activities in the corporate world." A Very Short Anecdote "Imagine a twelve-year-old boy getting home from school, dropping his books by the door, lighting up a cigarette and pulling a chocolate milk out of the fridge. This is the face of the growing teenage-smoking problem in America. We can fix this problem with higher cigarette prices, negative ad campaigns, and parental involvement in children's smoking choices." A Question "Have you ever seen a whale with a polka dot tail? You might answer no today, but with genetic engineering growing ever more popular you might change your answer in a matter of only a few years." Prompts are meant to give background information and to ask a question.

Introductions are meant to entice a reader and answer a question. Starting the essay is usually the hardest part. Luckily, the previous steps we've taken--coming up with a thesis and organizing the arguments--will take some of the pressure off. Now it's just time to come up with a creative and strong beginning. Introduction
Genetic engineering is the manipulation of a living organism's DNA or other cell material to achieve a desired result. Genetic engineering affects each one of us every day because, whether we know it or not, much of the food we eat is affected by genetic engineering. "'Do it today and then put it away,' my grandmother always used to say. She knew how to manage time long before "Time Management" became the subject of so many best-selling books. Procrastination is on the rise in our modern culture because of the influence of technology and the internet on psychology. "Who decides whether or not human cloning is fair and safe: the human being cloned or the clone themselves?" Don't restate the prompt A New Prompt!
