What are the Purposes of Schooling?
"“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.” - Dorothy Parker, American Poet 1893-1967
In forming a student government, we have discovered important questions about how KMS should be run. The goal of this space is to help us communicate our ideas make wise, informed decisions about how to run KMS by learning from history and each other.
2013 KMS comunicates with Brooklyn Freeschool.
KMS travels to the future.
This is KMS student Hannah Lane Zang and I have just traveled to year 2087 let's see how looks in the future.

The Future of Learning at KMS
Apprenticeships and the first American Schools
The General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony makes a law that every town of fifty families should have an elementary school. The goal is to teach children to read the Bible learn about religion.
Different Schools for the Rich and the Poor
Thomas Jefferson proposes a two-track educational system, with different tracks, or levels of schools for the rich and the poor. School would allow a very few of the laboring (poor) class to advance, Jefferson says, by "raking a few geniuses from the rubbish." The goal of having two kids of school was to keep rich families rich.
Many jobs are passed down through apprenticeships, which a young person works alongside an expert to learn their trade.
Questions: Did Native Americans go to school? How were they educated?
Lucie and Cara
This video, uploaded on May 28, 2010, may have been made by a student. It shares students' answers to these questions:
What do you think the purpose of school is? What will it look like in the future? What do you want it to look like in the future?
How would you like to be educated?
I like school with Liz.

1:More trips to the library.
I love to go to the library so much that if we had more trips to the library I would pick out more educational books.
I love spontaneous and with the addition of playing Icivics I love it even more so if we had more spontaneous I would use for research more than playing Icivics.

What is school? You learn to be careful at school. Someone in my class really wants to make potions. We have something called DaVinci time, and sometimes we have free choice DaVinci time. He really wants to make potions at school. Potions are dangerous, so that’s why we learn to be careful at school.
School is about learning. We have something where you notice about when people are using their social smarts. School is for learning social smarts. To raise your hand means you have an idea in your head and you want to tell it to your class. School is for learning to listen.
School is also for having fun. You can have fun at recess, but at KMS we have a recess at the first part of the day, in the middle of the day like usual, and when we get picked up at the end of the day. School is for learning.
It Doesn’t Matter if you’re Different, you Can Still Go to School
I like school School. It doesn't matter if you're different you still can go to school. It doesn't matter what color your skin is, you still can do math. Even if you learn differently than others you still can learn to read. Even if you have different color hair you still can learn to write. Like I said, I like school very much. School is very important.
Response to the video:
Why were the so many computers? I think it was weird. I mean I like computers but c'mon you gotta be kidding me. Because your eyes must hurt after a while. You should have only one hour a day. That is healthy.
Purposes of School
You should get a good education so that you can earn enough money to buy an house and stuff, and get an good job. And sometimes, even go to baseball parks and stuff. You won’t have to be forced to live on the streets and beg for money. You would have to get a job and a good education.
The government wants taxes from you. You make money and once you get a job and turn 18 you have no choice but to pay taxes. They usually spend it on stuff like missiles and new war utilities, and sometimes to build new streets. They get ten times the money in return when they pay for public schools.
WHY WE SHOULD HAVE A SCHOOL GOVERNMENT
By Soren and Felipe
If we had a school government it would help when we grow up because we will learn how to take care of our learning and learn how to take care of ourselves better throughout a school government, and we think that would be the best option. It also would give you a better sense of the world outside of school. It also would give you a better sense of being prepared more efficiently.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF SCHOOL?
The meaning of school is having fun and learning.
School helps to give you a respectful sense of the challenges ahead in the ongoing process of life. The meaning of school is to give rules to help your personal actions when you grow up. Another meaning of school is to learn subjects that can lead to getting jobs.
