Common knowledge means the solution of the questions have been known by the most of people such as widely known facts, dates, and 1+1=2. It doesn't need to be cited.
Five reasons why students plagiarize or cheat
Why do you think plagiarism a serious concern?
Three main strategies to avoid plagiarism:Quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing

: Put those words that you take from other text in quotation marks. It is more clearly to show the originator's thinking because there is nothing changed. The dangers are it is easy to forget to put in quotation marks.
The Middle Eastern water pipe known as the hookah has recently "been resurrected in youth-oriented coffeehouses, restaurants and bars, supplanting the cigar as the tobacco fad of the moment"
From http://www.lib.usm.edu/legacy/plag/quoting.php
Paraphrasing: A paraphrase may have same meaning but it is used in your own words. The good thing is you can add some your own idea with the originators together and get a better final one. The dangers is if you do no paraphrasing properly, it is seems to plagiarism and others will misunderstand you.
Original: Her life spanned years of incredible change for women.
Paraphrase: Mary lived through an era of liberating reform for women.

: A summary is used to get the important information or key ideas from a long paragraph and write down in your words. The advantage is you can pick the most helpful and suitable importation to use instead of writing down the article, it can save times and be more organized. If you want to summarize well, you must have a good understanding of the articles and then you can cut the useless information off

"'Miss Brill is the story of an old woman told brilliantly and realistically, balancing thoughts and emotions that sustain her late solitary life amidst all the bustle of modern life. Miss Brill is a regular visitor on Sundays to the Jardins Publiques (the Public Gardens) of a small French suburb where she sits and watches all sorts of people come and go. She listens to the band playing, loves to watch people and guess what keeps them going and enjoys contemplating the world as a great stage upon which actors perform. She finds herself to be another actor among the so many she sees, or at least herself as 'part of the performance after all.'
"One Sunday Miss Brill puts on her fur and goes to the Public Gardens as usual. The evening ends with her sudden realization that she is old and lonely, a realization brought to her by a conversation she overhears between a boy and a girl presumably lovers, who comment on her unwelcome presence in their vicinity. Miss Brill is sad and depressed as she returns home, not stopping by as usual to buy her Sunday delicacy, a slice of honey-cake. She retires to her dark room, puts the fur back into the box and imagines that she has heard something cry."

On the one hand, plagiarism is different than the copyright. However it is illegal and there are laws protecting the originator and constraining the plagiarist. Once someone violates those laws, they will get legal sanction such as claim.
On the other hand, plagiarism makes originator more disappointed, and it makes plagiarist more permissive. It is a kind of ethical offense which will affect the general mood of society.
