Transcript of The structure and function of the cardiovascular system

Blood vessels
Arteries ?

Arterioles ?

Veins ?

Venules ?

Capillaries ?
The heart is made up of 4 chambers
Left and right atria (at the top)
Left and right ventricles (at the bottom)

The
atria
deal with blood from the body coming in to the heart

The
ventricles
deal with blood leaving the heart and being pumped around the body

The two sides of the heart are labelled as though you are looking at it in someones chest. The two sides are divided by a wall of muscle called the septum
The structure of the heart
The structure and function of the cardiovascular system
What is the cardiovascular system?
What structures make up this system?

What is the function of the cardiovascular system?
Task two
Can you label your blank diagram with the following
Right Atrium
Left Atrium
Right ventricle
Left ventricle
Septum
Learning Outcomes
Identify the 2 main structures within the cardiovascular system

Identify the 5 types of blood vessel

Describe the structure and function of the 5 blood vessels

Label the 13 structures within the heart

Describe the four blood vessels going in and out of the heart

Detail the 3 functions of the cardiovascular system
Task one
Use the text book hand out to write a decription of the structure and function of each of the blood vessels - 10 minutes
The main blood vessels leading in and out of the heart
Blood arrives at the heart after being re-oxygenated at the lungs, via the
Pulmonary vein
.

The blood then enters the left atrium, goes in to the left ventricle then is pumped out to the body via the
Aorta

Once the blood has been taken around the body and deoxygenated, the blood returns back in the right atrium via the
Vena Cavae

The blood is then pumped from the right ventricle and taken back to the lungs to be re-oxygenated via the P
ulmonary artery.

The whole cycle then repeats

The hearts valves
Blood flows in one direction through the heart as a result of specially placed valves.

These valves can be found
between the left atrium and left ventricle (
Bicuspid valve
)
Between the right atrium and right ventricle (
Tricuspid valve
)
Between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, and between the left ventricle and the aorta. Both of these are referred to as
semi lunar
valves
Task three - can you label the blood vessels coming in and out of the heart on your blank diagram?
Task four - Can you label these valves on your diagram?
Research task five
Research the 3 functions of the cardiovascular system and present your findings back to the group
