: Fluorescent lights, neon lights, lightning, the Sun, Northern Lights
Solid
: atoms are
packed together
with
very low
energy to create a
fixed shape
.
Examples
: rocks, tables, chairs, literally all things solid
Liquid
: atoms are
less compact
, and energy is
increased
. Matter has a
constant volume
, but its shape forms to fit a container.
Examples
: water, oil, gasoline, etc.
Gas
: atoms
move freely
and are
very energized
. Matter
does not
have a fixed volume or shape.
Examples
: Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Helium, "air"
Sublimation
: A
solid
changes directly into a
gas
,
without
first becoming a liquid.
Example
: Dry Ice
Melting
: A
solid
becomes a
liquid
(aka Fusion).
Example
: Ice melting into water

Freezing
: A
liquid
becomes a
solid
(aka Solidification)
Example
: Water freezing into ice

Condensation
: A
gas

liquid

There are 4 basic states of matter:
1. Solid
2. Liquid
3. Gas
4. Plasma
Matter changes state as energy changes. This energy is usually in the form of temperature increasing and decreasing.
It is important to note that even when matter changes state, it is still the same type of matter!
