Transcript of The Cardiac Cycle And Heart Sounds

The Cardiac Cycle
&
Heart Sounds

It is a term that
refers
to the complete
cycle of events
in the heart relating to blood flow that takes place
from one heartbeat to the next.
A cardiac cycle, or a complete heartbeat consists of
2 main phases
:
DIASTOLE
SYSTOLE
SYSTOLE
2 parts of a systole:
Atrial Systole
&
Ventricular Systole.
Atrial Systole:
First, the
right atrium
recieves blood from the
body
from the
Vena Cava
while the
left atrium
recieves blood from the
lungs
via the
Pulmonary Vein.
Both atria contract,
forcing blood
from the atria
into
the
ventricles
.
Ventricular systole:
After a short pause, both ventricals contract.
The
increase
in
pressure
causes both the
tricuspid
and
bicuspid valves
to
close-
preventing backflow into atria-
'LUB'
sound produced.
When the ventricles contract, the atria relax.
When the
pressure
in the left ventricle is
more
than in the
aorta
,
semi-lunar valves
in the pulmonary and aortic arches are
forced open.
Right ventricle
pumps
to
the
body
, and
left ventricle to
the
lungs.
WHAT IS THE CARDIAC CYCLE?
DIASTOLE
The
ventricles relax
-this is
ventricular diastole
.
The
drop in pressure
in the ventricles cause the
semi-lunar valves
to
close
-preventing the backflow of blood.
This causes a soft
'DUB'
sound.
The decreasing pressure also causes the
bicuspid
and
tricuspid

valves
to
open
.
And then, the cycle repeats itself.
CARDIAC CYCLE
HEART BEAT
consists of a complete systole and diastole. ('DUB-LUB')
