Love Is Not All
Transcript of Love Is Not All
When I go away from you
The world beats dead
Like a slackened drum.
I call out for you against the jutted stars
And shout into the ridges of the wind.
Streets coming fast,
One after the other,
Wedge you away from me,
And the lamps of the city prick my eyes
So that I can no longer see your face.
Why should I leave you,
To wound myself upon the sharp edges of the night?
Love Is Not All
Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution's power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would
Some say a broken heart is like a shattered vase
Fragile pieces scattered all over the place.
The shattered pieces of broken glass seem to go everywhere
Unlike the pieces of a broken heart that seem to pierce your soul.
With faith and hope you try to mend the broken heart
Unlike the vase it cannot be so easily replaced.
It takes a while to mend it and then you lock it up
You hide the key and wait to see if someone can be found
A special person who will use the key to unlock the heart
A unique person who will handle the heart with gentle hands,
Who can be honest, truthful and handle it with care.
My heart and I wonder is there really that kind of person out there.
A Shattered Heart
by Amy Lowell
my initial response to the poem "love is not all" would be that i felt like the poem is saying that love isn't like a lot of things. I feel like the poem is describing what love is actually like. Or That he's trying to get rid of his love for her for peace. Her love is torching him " love can not fill the thickened lung with breath" that love seems like love is nothing like it seems to be that love has ups and downs and it's not perfect either. love is love nothing else. He regrets his love for her but at the same time he doesn't.
I wonder what happened to them to make things play out the way they did and Why he/she left. It talks about how sad they are away from each other "When I go away from you the world beats dead." Also I wonder if they love the other person so much why did they leave? Does the other person feel the same way? I think the main idea is that it hurts to leave people you love because one of the lines in the poem is "And the lamps of the city prick my eyes so that I can no longer see your face" or that if you love them let them go maybe? I wonder what their back story is?
My initial thoughts and responses
my initial thoughts
I felt that the poem was saying that once you break a heart it will never be the same.It will never be as perfect as it was before but that doesn't mean that you should try and fix it.
"fragile pieces scattered all over the place" is my favorite quote from the poem. I like it because its saying that when you brake and heart and vase the pieces are everywhere and you may never be able to put it back together
