Pregnancy and Childbirth Unit Fetal Development Month By Month Month 1 Size: At two weeks, the size of a pinhead
Egg attaches to lining of uterus
Internal organs and circulatory system begin to form. The heart begins to beat
Small bumps indicate the beginning of arms and legs Month 2 Size: About 1/4 inch Long as month begins
Face, eyes, ears and limbs take shape
Bones begin to form Month 3 Size: about 1 inch long as month begins
Nostrils, mouth, lips, teeth buds, and eyelids form
Fingers and toes almost complete
All organs present, but immature
Sex organs develop, gender can be determined
Forms facial expressions Month 4 Size: about 6 inches and 5oz
Sucks thumb
Facial features become clearer
Move about actively
Has a strong heartbeat that can be heard Month 5 Size: about 11-12 inches long and almost 1 lb
Eyelashes, eyebrows, and hair are forming
Eyes remain closed
Organs are maturing Month 6 Size: 12-14 inches long and about 1.5-2 lbs
Eyes are well formed and often opened,respond to light and noise
Grasp reflex develops
Skin is wrinkled and thin and covered with soft hair called lanugo and a white greasy protective substance called vernix
Breathing movement begins
fat starts to deposit under skin Month 7 Size 16-17 inches and weighs about 3-3.5 lbs
Develops a sleep/wake pattern
Remains very active, kicks and pokes mothers ribs and abdomen
Able to survive if born prematurely, but lungs are not yet fully developed. Month 8 Size: 17-18 inches long and weighs 5-6 lb.s
Become less active due to the larger size and less room Month 9 Size: 19-20 inches long and weighs 7-8 lbs.
Moves in to the head down position in preparation for birth
Loses most of the lanugo, skin is still wrinkled and red
A lot less active
Body systems are more mature, best chance of survival
Acquires disease-fighting antibodies from the mother's blood Stages of Fetal development
Embryonic Stage- begins with implantation and goes through the 8th week of pregnancy.
critical period for the developing fetus
as cell division continues it creates specialized layers that are responsible for all major organs and systems (heart,lungs, brain, digestive system)
many will be functional at the end of this period
Placenta begins to form
supplies nutrients and hormones to fetus
remove fetal waste product throughout pregnancy
filter out many harmful substances as well as viruses (many drugs can get through filter)
a temporary immune system supply fetus with mothers antibodies
Umbilical cord - contains 2 arteries and one vein, develops with the placenta (establishes the linkage between baby and mom
once developed baby is effected by mothers health
Fetus is most vulnerable if exposed to chemical substances
Germinal Stage- the first 14 days of pregnancy
Union of ovum and sperm produces zygote
Cell division begins within 24 hrs
Around day 14 the zygote attaches itself to the wall of the mother's uterus-implantation Fetal Stage- period between the ninth week and the onset of Labor and Delivery
fetal systems and structures are formed and are growing and maturing
