gravity causes oceans to bulge
low tides- water flows from area of low to high
tidal bulges appear to move westward around the earth
most locations have two high tides and two low tides daily
new moon/full moon- spring tides, high tidal range
1st and 3rd quarter moons- neap tides, low tidal range
Tidal Currents
toward coast- flood tide
away- ebb tide
slack water
tidal currents are strong in narrow bays and between coastlines
tidal bore- surge of tide water that rushes upstream from ocean
