5LO The 6 Simple Machines A lever is a simple machine that does work by turning around a fixed point.There are 3 types of levers. The First Class Lever, the Second Class Lever, and the Third Class Lever. The First Class Lever has the fulcrum in the middle, the effort is on the left, and the load is on the right. The Second Class Lever has the load in the middle, the fulcrum on the left, and the effort is on the right. The Third Class Lever has the effort in the middle, the load is on the bottom, and the fulcrum is on the top. The lever helps us by changing the force's direction. The lever doesn't just make us lift the force directly, there is a fulcrum that helps us balance the force, with the effort and load. Levers A wheel and axle consists of a larger wheel fixed to a smaller wheel, called an axle. The wheel helps us by reducing the amount of force required to turn the axle. The axle helps us by operating a mechanism. Ex. A doorknob. It is easier to open a door by turning the knob, which is a wheel, than just trying to turn the shaft, which is the axle. Wheel and Axle A screw acts as an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. Its threads are like a sloping, slanting surface. The screw helps us, because when it turns, the direction of force is changed and increased. People also use screws to hold wood and metal together. The more threads the screw has, the less force needed. Screw A pulley is a wheel with a groove. The groove allows a rope or cable to ride on the wheel without slipping off. Movable pulleys are movable on both sides. This means someone could put a load on either side; and pull on the other to make the load raise up. A fixed pulley can only have a load on one specific side; and be pulled down on the other to raise the load. A Compound pulley is a combination of a fixed, and movable pulley. The pulley helps us by changing the direction of force. Pulleys A wedge is an inclined plane that has 2 or more sloping sides. It also has 2 narrow sides. When a wedge is placed on top of an object, the sides push the object apart. A wedge helps us because it decreases the effort needed to cut/separate objects. Wedge An inclined plane is any flat slanting surface. The longer it is, the less effort is needed. The inclined plane is very useful. It helps us by decreasing the effort we need to move an object.It helps if the surface of the plane is smooth. If the surface is rough, the friction will cause more force to be needed. The inclined plane is fixed.
