The River Rises
Julia and Robbie looked
out
the window.

“Is it
ever
going to
stop raining
, Grandma?” Julia asked.

“It has been raining hard
for
three days.”

"I hope it stops soon," Grandma said.

"I don't know
if
the Acorn River can take much more.

She looked
worried
.

Most of the time, the Acorn River was a nice, slow river,

but
now it was full and fast. Still the rain was falling.

That night the weatherman
on
the television looked serious.

"The river is approaching flood stage," he said.

"People are putting sandbags
along
the bank."

"Oh, dear," said Grandma, she looked really worried.

"What should we do, then?" Julia asked.

Grandma said, "We need to be ready to leave, just in case."

Julia and Robbie looked

"We'll help," Julia said.

She didn't want
to be
washed away.

The thought made her
scared
.

"Pack a suitcase
with
things

for
a few days," said Grandma.

Julia and Robbie went
into
their rooms and packed clothes, shoes, and books for school.

"Julia, don't forget your toothbrush."

"Okay, and can I bring some dolls?" Julia asked her brother.

"Sure," Robbie said.

Grandma packed a suitcase, too.

In addition to clothes, she made sure she had important papers

and her photo albums.

Then Grandma
told
Julia and Robbie
to
gather a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, and canned food.

And she
told
them
not

to
forget the battery-powered radio,

which
is very important in an emergency.

Grandma also packed the small cooker,

and then she
filled
empty plastic bottles
with
water

and put them in a box.

"We need to have enough water," she said.

"We don't know what may happen."

Grandma turned on the radio
to
catch
any
important news.

"Now get some sleep," Grandma said.

Grandma woke up the children at 5 o'clock the next morning.

"It's time
to
go. We're being asked to leave as soon as possible.

The river is overflowing its banks."

Julia and Robbie
were scared

excited
at the same time.

Other families were doing the same thing.

It was still raining. "I

," said Julia.

"Where's the water?"

"It's still far away,
but
it's coming

the sandbags,"

Grandma said. "We're going to the next town.

There's a Red Cross shelter there.

We'll stay there

"Is the house all right?" Julia asked.

She was almost

"Don't cry, Julia," said Robbie.

"We are safe here and soon the rain will stop."

"(Is)

She
didn't have to
ask twice.

The children were hungry.
After
breakfast, they went out.

And then Julia realized something.
