Radiation Radiation Although you cannot escape radiation there are ways in reducing your exposure What can we do about it? When a source emits energy
as electromagnetic waves or
as moving subatomic particles.
People today are surrounded with radiation:
radio towers
televisions,
cell phones,
microwave ovens, computers,
satellites
and so much more.
Doesn’t go away over time
,it just accumulates. Sources - There are many sources of
radiation all around us, some
are unavoidable , but a lot are
man-made.

- Many may come as a surprise
as radiation is not so

Don't chat with poor signal How Radiation is Measured Radiation is measured in Roentgen equivalent in men or REM REM represents the total amount of radiation needed to cause damage to living tissue Physical Health Doses above 100 REM's cause the first signs of radiation sickness, symptoms are:
Vomiting
Nausea
Headache
Hair Loss
Some loss of white blood cells Doses of 300 REM's or more cause temporary hair loss. It also causes internal harm which includes nerve cell damage and damage to cells lining the digestive tract. Severe loss of white blood cells occurs which make people more susceptible to disease. Radiation also lowers production of blood platelets. Half of all people exposed to 450 REM's die while doses of 800 REM's or more is always fatal Physical Health Con't Other symptoms Include fever and diarrhea In time, for survivors, diseases such as Leukemia, lung cancer, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, etc. can appear do to radiation exposure. Environmental Health Some forms of radiation are found in the environment and others are due to modern technology Most have the potential for both beneficial and harmful effects Even sunlight can be harmful in excessive amounts Enviro. Health Con't Ionizing radiation is a harmful form of radiation. It disrupts atoms, creating positive ions and negative electrons, which can cause biological harm Types of ionizing radiation:

Lighter, natural skin
Skin that burns, has freckles, gets red, or is painful in the sun
Certain types/large number of moles
Family History of cancer
Personal History
Personal/Family History of sun burns
Constant exposure to sun through work and/or play
People who tan The most common source of prenatal radiation exposure is medical exams: CT or CAT) scan of the abdomen or pelvis, lower back X-rays, or standard pelvic X-rays.
Women who are pregnant could potentially have a miscarriage if exposed to large amounts of radiation (above the dose received from 500 chest x-rays)
Can show signs of acute radiation syndrome, aka radiation sickness. The Embryo/Fetus Is most sensitive during the first 2 weeks of pregnancy
Damage to one cell can cause the death of the embryo
Exposure to too much radiation can cause birth defects and genetic mutation such as:
-smaller size of the head
-small brains-poorly formed eyes
-abnormally slow growth
-mental retardation/disability
For the babies that survive, few will have birth defects, regardless of how much radiation they were exposed to. The End What is Canada doing about it? - Researching biological effects
