William Harvey Carney
William Harvey Carney was born February 29,1840. He was born a slave in Virginia but later than escaped and bought his family out of slavery later. He volunteered as a sergeant in the military and was part of the assault on Fort Wagner on July 18,1863. Even though Carney was shot in the face, shoulders, arms, and legs he was able to save the american flag and put it on the parapet. It wasn't until nearly 37 years later when Carney received the medal of honor. He died soon after and had an image of the medal of honor engraved on his monument. He was the African American to win the Medal of honor
What we think...
What we really noticed was Carneys honor and courage. Even tho he was wounded very bad, he kept on to save the american flag. Carney showed alot of patriotism and Citizenship because he showed his love for America and its importance by raging on while being hurt.
