Hannah Held and Sarah Nobles Tropical rainforest Biome http://www2.needham.k12.ma.us/nhs/cur/Bio96_97/P3/TropicalRF/cgdb3.html Map of the Area The Tropical Rainforests contain many tall trees with straight trunks and smooth thin bark to protect them from water loss. There is year round warmth and very high humidity. The tree tops create a thick, multilayered canopy, which blocks the majority of light from reaching the forest floor. It looks very green with lots of vines and contains a lot of biodiversity. Description of Biome PLANT LIFE: Bamboo is found in rainforests worldwide. Banana trees, sugar cane, nutmeg and mace are found in the rainforests of Australasia Cassava, Chicle, Allspice, rubber, Cacao and vanilla are found in the rainforests of the Americas. Ginger, Black pepper, Jackfruit and Rattan are found in Indo-Malasian Rainforests. Cola and Ebony are found in African Rainforests. Leaves have what's called a "drip tip", which they have formed to adapt to the extremely high rainfall. The drip tips allow water to run off the plants very quickly and avoid the growth of fungus and bacteria. Climate The basic abiotic factors of a tropical rainforest are rainfall, weather, humidity, and temperature/ sunlight, The average amount of precipitation for a tropical rainforest is about 250 cm per year with 77%-88% humidity. Soil Wind Patterns Rainforests are affected by oceanic tropical air masses which flow out from the western sides of oceanic high-pressure cells. These air masses bring excessive rainfall in the summer which causes warmth and humidity. The soils of tropical rainforests are heavily leached and lack nutrients because it is very old and the excessive rainfall washes away many minerals. Also, sunlight can turn the soil into clay causing it to lose nutrients. The topsoil in tropical rainforests is only 1-2 inches deep and plants must store nutrients in themselves rather than receiving it from the soil. Limiting Factors Sunlight is a major limiting factor in tropical rainforests because beneath the thick canopy that the trees create, there is a low intensity of sunlight that plants must adapt to in order to survive. Water is another important limiting factor in tropical rainforests because rainforest plants need a large amount of water to survive and thrive in their environment, so when the season with the least amount of rainfall comes it can be a limiting factor to many plants. The climate receives about 250 cm of rainfall a year, averaging about 4 inches per month. In addition, the average temperature is around 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This is due to the high levels of solar radiation annually. Tmperature and Precipitation Effects on Plants Trees make up the majority of the biome. Much of the precipitation never reaches the forest floor because the tallest trees (hundreds of feet) form a canopy that acts as a shield. As a result, The forest floor, also known as the understory, contains the smallest of plants that have adapted to the lack of water and grow accordingly. In addition, the layer between the canopy and understory is made up of medium sized trees that have adapted to their average amount of rainfall. Also, the plants in the biome have adapted to the warm temperatures and have learned to grow towards the scarce mount of sunlight they receive (at the bottom). As a result, the mosses and ferns grow on other plants at higher elevations in order to revive as much sunlight as possible. In conclusion, if a plant is tall, it has most likely received the most sunlight and rainfall and the plants in the bottom layer must learn to adapt to the small quantities remaining for them. Some specific, helpful plant adaptations include bark, which helps limit the evaporation from the trunks and helps contain the water, Buttresses, which provide extra stability for the trees with roots not as deep as most, and Lianas, which help plants striving for sunlight to climb high to fulfill their needs for the limited resource. Because of the many layers in the Tropical rainforest Biome, there are over 15 million different species living in its different parts.The annual warm temperatures and the varying levels of precipitation make the biome a good home for many organisms. Due to their adaptations to the warmth, they can't survive any cold temperatures. The animals may go anywhere in the multi-layered forest to fullfill their needs for food and shelter. In order to avoid the many predators that share their biome, organisms may adapt camouflage to the green colors of the forests, or simply adapt better beaks more suitable for quick eating due to the high levels of competition.
