Transcript of Atonement

FBC’s Articles of Faith read as follows concerning Atonement:

We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; through the mediatorial offices of the Son of God, who by the appointment of the Father, freely took upon Him our nature, yet without sin, honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and by His death made a full and vicarious atonement for our sins; that His atonement consisted not in setting for us an example by His death as a martyr, but was a voluntary substitution of Himself in the sinner's place, the Just dying for the unjust; Christ, the Lord, bearing our sin in His own body on the tree; that having risen from the dead, He is now enthroned in Heaven, and uniting in His wonderful person the tenderest sympathies with divine perfection. He is in every way qualified to be a suitable, a compassionate and all-sufficient Savior.

Atonement
1) With A.W. Tozer we affirm that “We
pursue
God because, and
only
because, He has
first
put an
urge
within us that
spurs
us to the pursuit” (
The Pursuit of God
, 11).
2) God’s
character
is such that His
response
to sin is
wrath
.
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” ... To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven."
John 3:3, 27
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent Me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. ... He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has enabled them.”
John 6:44, 65
"For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will—-to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves."
Ephesians 1:4-6
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast."
Ephesians 2:8-9
for dust you are
"The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, 'I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.'”
Genesis 6:5-7
"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them."
Romans 1:18-19
"...and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—-He did it to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus."
Romans 3:24-26
"I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll."
Revelation 22:18-19

3) In His
love
, however, God has
always
provided
a
substitution
for
sinners
.
"He is to present the bull at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it there before the Lord."
Leviticus 4:4
"He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness."
Leviticus 16:21-22
"For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life."
Leviticus 17:11
4) The Old Testament
sacrifices
/
substitutes
pointed to
Christ
and Him being
slain
on the
cross
in our
place
, as J.I. Packer stated, “Redeeming
love
and retributive
justice
joined hands" (In My Place Condemned He Stood, 41).
"However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness." Romans 4:5
"He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification." Romans 4:25
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Romans 5:9-10
"He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?" Romans 8:32
For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 2 Corinthians 5:14
All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." 2 Corinthians 5:18-21
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
Galatians 2:20

redemption
from captivity to
sin
(Romans 3:24; 6 Galatians 3:13; 4:5; 1 Peter 1:18; Revelation 5:9)
5) As a
result
of Christ’s
atoning
work, we have:

reconciliation
or
peace
with God (Romans 5:10-11; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20; Colossians 1:20-22)
