Transcript of Research Questions and Note Taking

Research Questions
A good research question can't be answered in one word or with a 'yes' or a 'no'.
Example: How tall is bigfoot?

There. Research done. Finished. Over.
Whatever will you do for three weeks?

Is the Bermuda Triangle real?
How tall is Bigfoot?
Is the Bermuda Triangle real?

A better question might be: What are the different ways that people have described a Bigfoot sighting?

A much better research question!
Now, when you research you can look up all of the following to answer that question!
Characteristics of the creature
Who sighted it
Where they were/what they were doing
ETC...

How to take notes
Once you choose your final research
questions you will start your research. You will

Tips
When you are sure you have found information worth writing down--- WRITE DOWN THE BIBLIOGRAPHIC information FIRST.
It really stinks when you have great facts but
totally forgot which online resource or book they
came from. You'll have to redo any research that isn't cited properly!
Only use one PAGE or SIDE of the notes page for each source. We have extra pages. Don't cram all your research on one page.

A source
is a book, database, website, or article.
This is a source.
This is a different source.
Finding one answer in one source is not enough. It's not really research unless you have a lot of information (and sometimes the same information) from multiple sources.
Maybe both of these books say the same thing about
about one of your research questions. GREAT! Write down info from both of them! It strengthens your research and will help you find multiple facts per question.
A good way to judge if you have enough information is to ask yourself: Do I have enough information to write several paragraphs about this research question? Do I have enough information to create an entire presentation on these questions?
AFTER YOU WRITE YOUR RESEARCH QUESTIONS... SHOW THEM TO YOUR ELA TEACHER. YOU MUST GET A SIGNATURE BEFORE STARTING THE RESEARCH.
So, if I find 3 facts from here

and three facts from here...
Some scientists believe that water
currents are to blame for the strange happenings.

Welcome to the research process for the Passion Project!
This Prezi will show you how to write good research questions and how to use the notes sheets.

Or, if I find two facts here.
And one fact here.
You also shouldn't be able to ask Google or Siri for the answer!
I am a tool to help you RESEARCH answers. I shouldn't be able to just give you an answer!
NOTHING, SIRI! I DON'T NEED YOU! I AM A
MASTERFUL RESEARCHER!
Yes.

I'm a source!
I'm a source!
What do you mean by "source"?
A source is WHERE you get your information from.
It's the SOURCE of your information.
I would need TWO research notes papers. Each SOURCE uses ONE SIDE.

SUPER IMPORTANT
Use one side of the research notes sheet PER SOURCE.

REMEMBER
!
Am I finished researching a question?
Is this a good website to use?
Use the research flowchart in your Passion Project Folder. You must try to use the flowchart BEFORE you ask for help.
You may either read or listen to the Prezi.
Please be mindful of the people around you and turn
down the sound!

Some random and not credible guy.
I know things! Listen to my facts!
Credible sources all saying the same thing!
And so on...
I'm struggling to find the answers to my research questions. What should I do????
You may need to rewrite your research questions! This is part of the research process. Yes, it can be frustrating but that's the research process!
