Celebrates the end of tomato harvest
FUN Started in Buñol, Spain
Many people all over the world gather to participate in the food fight
Known as La Tomatina Began when friends started a tomato fight for unknown reasons - there are many theories!
Started in the 40's
Don't know where the first throw was aimed at
Others joined in for fun
Fiesta has been celebrated annually and more people come each year to see this spectacle
To draw more tourism (and more targets) into Buñol, La Tomatina has become a huge fiesta The week before La Tomatina parades, fireworks, food and street parties
The night before La Tomatina, the streets are filled with tomatoes
Early Wednesday morning, shopkeepers and business owners along the Plaza cover windows and doors
People gather in the Plaza
Large trucks arrive in the square
At 11 AM, city officials begin pelting the awaiting people with sloppy, squishy tomatoes from the back of the trucks for an hour
A rocket starts and finishes the tomato fight
100 tons (220,000 lbs) of tomatoes are used Bottles and hard objects like glass are prohibited as they can cause accidents and hurt other participants
Ripping of T-shirts are not allowed
Tomatoes must be squashed before throwing them as this reduces chance of injury
Keep a safe distance from the trucks
