Transcript of The Trashy Middle Ages

The Trashy Middle Ages
Sanitation in the Middle Ages was absolutely
HORRIBLE!

-Everybody used the same
bath!

-Left
"stuff"
behind

-It was warm =
bacteria

The Bathing Process
The wealthy
-Took baths once or twice a
YEAR
-It was difficult to heat
water
, get firewood

The poor
-
Once
before

marriage
and that was it!
Don't you wish you could smell history!!!
Bathing Procedure
1 big bucket for
EVERYONE!

The water was
COLD

Everyone uses the
same
water!
-It went
oldest to youngest
-"don't throw out the baby with the bath water"
The Bathrooms
Not located in their
houses
...so now what?!?!
Grab a
bucket
...then...bombs away!
The content's "gifts" would be flung into the
streets

You yell out: "
Gardey loo
!!!!"
TRASH
Went into the
street
too!

NO ONE
PICKED
IT UP!
-Rats, mice, maggots, flies, other insects/bugs, pigs, wild hogs, and stray cats
What is
Puddin' Lane?
Sounds like a treat doesn’t it? Mmmm, pudding! Trust me you wouldn’t want to eat this kind of puddin’
Puddin’ Lane was the
butchers
quarter in London and it was an unpaved street that ran
downhill
.
The butchers would throw all the
parts
of the animal into the street that they didn’t need (ie: guts, stomach, intestines, eyeballs, skull/brains, etc.)
It would all flow downhill especially when it rained and create at the bottom of the hill a combination of
mud
,
guts
, blood,
feces
, trash, and other assorted goodies that became affectionately known as "
puddin
"
The Poor
Often times didn’t have shoes!
What if they wanted to get some meat? They had to go to the butcher’s quarter right? I’ll let you figure it out!
They would use trenchers as plates. A piece of stale bread. They would reuse the same trencher over and over again until it molded over! Disgusting!
Some were so poor that they would never ever throw any leftovers away. They would scrape off any leftovers into a pot that would be continuously boiling over the fire. For 9 days they would do this until on the 9th day they would eat all of the mixed together leftovers from the previous meals as their meal.
“Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot 9 days old!”
Doctors & Dentists
It did not require a degree!
If you wanted to be a doctor or a dentist you simply placed a sign outside your
house
stating the fact that you were one!
Blood Letting
Blood letting- purposely cutting yourself to let all of the
"bad"
blood out.
Doctors thought blood letting would
cure
you of most things
Frequently the doctors bled them too much and they died!
Aren't you glad you live now?!?!
The Romans bathed right?!?
Meanwhile a dentist would just
rip
out bad teeth
OBJECTIVE:

Describe conditions in the Middle Ages
(why do we call it the trashy Middle Ages)

Check for examples of Middle Ages in movies!

For example: Beauty and the Beast
