Ponce de León
Transcript of Ponce de León
Born in Santervás de Campos, Spain in 1460
Served as a page for the royal court Aragon (a page is basically an assistant)
Later became a soldier fighting for Moors in Granada
Started out by coming with Christopher Columbus on his 2nd exploration
Used Tactics from his time as a page to control natives in Caribbean
Built Many Settlement/farms/etc in Hispaniola (which is now Haiti & Dominican Republic)
Made the first trip to Florida in 1513 just to look for more islands
Called Florida because it was Easter which is Pascua Florida in Spanish
At first thought it was another island
Eventually colonized Florida
Return trip to Florida had at least 200 people in February 1521
Almost all were killed by the Calsua indians
Ponce de León was shot by an arrow and was taken back to Havana, Cuba where he died.
Exploration: Fountain of Youth
In 1512, King Ferdinand had him explore more because Ponce de León was so loyal.
May have heard rumors of the "Fountain of Youth" on Bimini island
Later became governor of Bimini
Never actually searched for "Fountain of Youth" only tied to his name because of another "jealous" explorer
Exploration: San Juan Bautista
San Juan Bautista is now Puerto Rico
Ponce de León explored because of rumors of gold (1508)
May have unofficially explored San Juan Bautista two years before
Settled the island as governor of San Juan Bautista.

Treated Natives better than most conquistadors
No actual record of him searching for the FOuntain of Youth (considered to practical to search for some crazy rumor)
Fountain of Youth was thought to be the Garden of Eden because everyone kind of thought that the Americas were Asia.
Body was moved to Puerto Rico
