Pizza as Fractions

Lesson Description
Students are asked to consider how pizza could teach them about math.
Multiple techniques are used to reach different learning styles.
Students watch a video to help them visualize the content.
Students are asked to construct a model for hands on learning.
Short fractions video
About modeling
Students are asked to construct a model pizza using construction paper, crayons, etc.
They are asked to make as many slices of pizza as they want, but the pizza should be able to feed their family.
Using multiple methods of instruction will increase student understanding.
Enhance learning
Reflection on the Art and Science of Teaching
Help students effectively learn from the project
Make changes to fill in any learning gaps identified.
Maintain classroom rules during activity.
Build and manage relationships with the students.
Consider the overall outcome of the lesson.

Kids can learn about fractions by using slices of pizza as a model. Almost all kids like pizza.
Ask the students to be creative!
Students can easily identify slices of pizza as fractions.
Pizza toppings could also be viewed as fractions.
Prompt students to ask questions about how the slices/toppings are fractions of a whole.
This is a direct way for students to make sense of what they are learning and it gives them time to think(“Perspectives of Hands On Science Teaching”, n.d.).

Hands on learning
Hands on activities, will develop logic, increase creativity, and positive attitudes.
Individual project work within a group setting will foster independence.
Students enjoy collaborating on work especially when it is fun.
The research on how videos increase understanding for learners.
Students enjoy watching videos and can be easily understood.
“The explicit use of visual explanation exposed elements of students’ thinking that would not have been revealed by written tests or even probing interviews to investigate curricular topics firsthand and to express themselves creatively, visually, physically, and verbally”(Frazier & Caemmerer, 2014, para. ).
Watching Videos to assist in the learning process encourages students to consider, understand the subject and build up their own knowledge in a personal way (Gazi & Aksal, 2011).
