By: Jessica Beckwith Basic Information After his fathers death
he and his family wandered homeless in search of work. When they found work, John still went hungry. When he was 14 he took a job caring for hospital patients who suffered from incurable diseases. From this John learned to search for beauty and happiness not in the world, but in God. John Escapes He was a Poet After surviving for 9 months John escaped his cell by unscrewing the lock, and climbing out a window without a guard seeing him. the only thing he took with him was the poetry he had written. Unaware of where he was, he followed a dog and came upon a convent. he read the poetry to the nuns and decided to devote his life to sharing and explaining his relationship with God and God's love. St. John of the Cross St. John of the Cross was born in Fontiveros, Spain around 1542
he was the youngest of 3 children
his feast day is December 14
his father died when he was an infant
he was ordained a priest in 1567
he died in 1591 John was kidnapped by some of the Carmelites because he believed in the reforms St. Teresa of Avila believed. He was locked in a cell and beaten 3 times a week by the monks. His love and faith in God grew like fire and light in that tiny dark cell. Prayer of St. John of the Cross Saint John of the Cross, in the darkness of your worst moments, when you were alone and persecuted, you found God. Help me to have faith that God is there especially in the times when God seems absent and far away.

Amen. His Persecution His writings were first published in 1618. He is considered one of the most famous poets in the Spanish language. all of his poems were written between 1578-1591. He wrote books on spiritual growth and prayer. some of his books include, Ascent of Mount Carmel and Dark Night of the Soul. His Early Years
